Engineers Serve as Hotel Men in European War Setup

U S Army engineers staged a novel role in the European invasion, acting as hotel staff for mass troop marshalling areas before D-Day. Base Section Headquarters in Nissen huts expanded camps, camouflaged sites, provided food and beds, and managed sanitation while engineers also served as cooks and supply personnel. They oversaw clothing and equipment exchanges after the assault and earned praise from an infantry colonel for efficient camp administration. Second Lieutenant John K. McGrath Jr and Frank Carter of Saline were among the engineers serving in these duties.
