America the unofficial national anthem and its creator
By Elmo Scott Watson the centennial of the song America is noted and Samuel Francis Smith is celebrated as its author. The piece recounts how Smith wrote the hymn in 1832 for a Boston children's celebration, its publication in Juvenile Lyre, and the tune sharing a melody with God Save the King. It traces Smiths life in Boston Waterville and Newton and mentions the Harvard manuscript, Lowell Mason, and the song’s role in schools as a patriotic staple.
