Saline residents may continue installing natural gas heating equipment while other Michigan areas face permit suspensions. Michigan Consolidated Gas Co says ample gas supplies exist and permits for new conversions are limited by the Michigan Public Service Commission. A special allocation covers Saline and other newly served areas. not all such permits are issued yet. New customers will be served as the commission authorizes more conversions. In other cities, filings are handled on a first come, first served basis once gas is available. Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co seeks to block new heating customers. Continued on page 6.
More than 200 youngsters from toddlers to fourth grade took part in Saline Jaycees sixth annual Easter Egg Hunt at City Park. Ton Rapp chaired the event. Forty five dozen eggs were hidden at 2 30 pm with prize eggs awarding special prizes. Eleven prize winners reported finds. Preschool winners were Scott Sackett first Jackie Leonard second Michael Wright third Bruce Morton fourth. Kindergarten and first grade winners were Chuckie Karen first and third George Beal second. Third group winners were John Harvey first Randy Sloan second Carol Engel third Karen Siemsen fourth.
The Saline Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a special public meeting at the American Legion Memorial Home next Monday at eight to study Saline's building plans for the future. Sanford Fairness of the Washtenaw County Planning Commission may attend, with discussions on locating the proposed new high school in the western area amid anticipated growth and drainage concerns.
Grosvenor L. Parsons longtime Saline merchant owner of Parsons Men's Clothing at 102 E. Michigan Avenue. Services conducted at Lockwood Funeral Home with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Survived by son Robert two granddaughters and two great grandchildren.
Mrs Clarence Niethammer is now convalescing at her home after a stay at St Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Al Weber died in a barn fire at the Weber farm 8310 Ellsworth Road after attempting to rescue 70 sheep and lambs. Frieda Weber watched as he entered the flames despite heart trouble and prior advice to quit farming. A previous lightning fire struck the same farm in 1942. they have three children and ten grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs Paul Porter announce the birth of their son James Kenneth on April 16 in Coldwater. The baby weighed six pounds fourteen ounces and has two brothers and two sisters. They reside at 207 West Chicago Street.
Douglas Cobb age eight is a patient this week at St. Joseph's Hospital in Ann Arbor under observation. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie J. Cobb of 209 West Henry. Read readers hope for a speedy recovery as the family and friends send their best wishes.
All Saline area boys 15 and under are urged to report at the high school field this Saturday at 1 p.m. for preliminary tryouts to join Little League or Babe Ruth League. If rain, tryouts move to next week. Six communities are signed for the Huron Valley Babe Ruth League including Saline, Milan, Manchester, Eston, Stockbridge and Ypsilanti.
Five month old Robert Frederick Schill died in a car crash on S Macomb Street in Manchester when the vehicle driven by his mother Emma Jean Schill lost control and struck a tree. The infant suffered skull fractures and brain injury, and his mother sustained injuries. Relatives include Verle and Mrs. Schill, former Dairy Queen operators in Saline. the father works in Tecumseh.
A Saline women duo identified four old Observer photos in the Old Picture Identification contest. First prize to Mrs. Leo Westphal who listed the stage curtain of the De Saline Opera House from about 1920, and second prize to Mrs. Merritt W. Martin Sr. for She identified buildings including Weidman Auto Co and Manchester Hands Factory.
