Visitors tour the Orth Street Johns elevator project as crews clear land, divert the Ogden slough, and build docks, piers, bunkers, and the big elevator. Excavation, trenching, pile driving, and 24 hour pumping mark continuous work ahead of fall operation.
A large bridal shower was given for Miss Gilmore by friends in St Johns. Guests surprised her with blindsfolding to a table laden with gifts, including kitchenware linen silver and glass. Mrs Viola Demeries sang several solos with Miss Fassett at the piano as ices and wafers were served.
Jersey Street shop advertises household fans and general notions. E Foy listed as proprietor. Electric store items include alarm clocks and watches. Urgin Says So push promotes value with lowest prices on staples.
James John High School overwhelmed Washington High School at Multnomah Field 28 to 0. The James John eleven fired 16 forward passes for 15 to 30 yards, scored four times, and shut down Washington’s offense despite early pressure. Clough Dalton Glasser and Newton starred for James John.
A Sunday evening union meeting in the High School auditorium urged greater Liberty Bond support. Hon. D Lewis chaired. speakers included Harry E. Tucker and Conrad P. Olson of Portland. Patriotic hymns led by Dr. H F Jones with The Star Spangled Banner sung by Mrs. Gabriel Pullin boosted the tenor. Subscriptions were encouraged for bonds the next day.
A nostalgic verse describes Halloween pranks and fears among youths and townspeople. It recalls witches in legends, curious lights, carved pumpkins, string tricks, and stakeouts by authorities as children revel and adults guard doors.
John Brownley and Floy Coffey, popular St. Johns youths, married in Portland Saturday evening. Former James John High School students, both belonged to Chiappa Phi Fraternity and the Delta Phi Sonority. They plan a long, prosperous life together and have settled in a Portland apartment house.
The ship yard strike ended Tuesday after five weeks and two days. Both sides gained concessions. unions win shop committee representation while open shop policy remains. Eight hour day and overtime terms set by Federal Adjustment Board. Fringes include weekly paydays, on site first aid, and wage protections. High school events include food conservation talk by K C Couch and a parade participation. St Johns students enlisted in Uncle Sam's service with many names listed and several in training camps.
Government inspector Martin Hogan of St Johns marries Laura Thibideau of Dover Maine after a forty hour adoration ceremony at St Clement's Church. The couple, joined by Father Van Halder and witnesses Dan Hogan and a bridesmaid, plan a short honeymoon in St Johns before considering permanent residence.
A kidnapped eight month old baby boy was found aboard a laundry wagon in Detroit after a Monday morning incident. Mrs. George Cole reported the baby missing from her front steps and said she left a basket of soiled linen each week for pickup. The baby was discovered under a wheel and later sorted from laundry before being returned to his distraught mother.
J. S. McKinney notes the sale of a Hartman Street house owned by Mrs. C. Moyer to Madalene O. Alba, plus two Erie Street houses from the Miller estate to Mrs. L. M. Fletcher and to Fred Carlson. He reports seven property sales in the past week.
Will Buy Liberty Bond is topic of Sunday morning service while evening service will be for prayer at the Baptist church under President Wilson’s request. Dr. Borden to lead. Y P A plans to invest in a Liberty Bond. Mrs Patterson’s class hosted a Halloween party with black cats witches and broomsticks. Participants included many local names and families.
Mrs Rebecca A Price died at her daughter’s home 1196 Mallory Ave in 1917 aged 83 or 84. Survived by nine children four grandsons and five great grandchildren area relatives in Oregon Washington and Massachusetts. Funeral held in Hillsboro with interment beside her husband in Oddfellow Cemetery.
