Horace Ashenfelter's World Record Helsinki Steeplechase Triumph
In Helsinki 1962 Horace Ashenfelter edged Russian rival Vindale Rabahteev in a brutal 3000m steeplechase, breaking the world record amid a dramatic finish. McMillan nearly matched the mark, while Josy Barthel of Luxembourg held off a late challenge. The tense race left Ashenfelter celebrated as a global symbol of grit.
