Hillside Best for Peach Orchard Planting

A hillside with good soil is the best place for a peach orchard. A northern slope is ideal to reduce spring freeze losses and injury from sudden winter temperature drops. Land should be in cultivation three to four years to avoid root decay and termite damage.

Peach Picking and Handling Guidelines for Ripening Fruit

The guide explains how to judge ripeness by yielding texture and color, warns against using thumb pressure to test peaches, and notes mature but not ripe fruit for trucking. It covers picking order, bruising avoidance, padding, shade cooling, and prompt grading for shipment to prevent softening and rot.

Well Prepared Soil For Peach Trees

The article stresses thorough soil preparation before peach planting. It recommends terracing to prevent erosion, spring cultivation to renovate soil, and a summer cover crop with crotalaria spectabilis to add nitrogen and reduce nematodes. Avoid crops attacked by nematodes and let crotalaria reseed before sowing vetch or oats.

Sandy Soil Best for Peaches in Orchard Planting

Sandy soil with sandy loam and clay subsoil is best for peach growing. Soils must drain well and allow aeration. Do not plant peaches on soils where water stands or stay damp and cold for long periods.

Pegeties Left on Tree Indicate Ripeness and Color Clues

Article notes peaches left on branches become soft and ripe, with color changes guiding when to pick. Mentions selling to local stores and neighbors and hints at varying color stages observed in the fruit.

Peaches Growth Advice in North Louisiana Soils

Mottled gray drab soils that do not drain well hinder peach growing. For commercial plantings, sandy or sandy loam hill sides with porous clay soils are preferred. In many North Louisiana parishes such soils exist, but poor drainage in places limits large scale commercial peach orchards. The Red River valley offers better soil for peaches with proper drainage.
