Jack Brooks Dies in Boston Hospital Rites Thursday

Charles Jack Brooks aged 48 dies Tuesday evening in Boston Hospital. Funeral at Spars Home Chapel with interment Greenwood Cemetery officiated by Rev Avery Lee. Survived by wife Grtil(e) Mae Harris Brooks, daughter Penny, parents, sisters, and brother Leonard Key Brooks Jr.

Nine Appear Before Judge Jones Monday

City Judge Fred Jones fined nine in City Court Monday. Bidford Bolin, Robert Denis Lignowski, P. C. Connell, James J. Ferrer and Ronald J. Forney each fined $15 and costs for disturbing the peace by appearing intoxicated in public. Larry Waltorff fined $50 and costs for operating a motor vehicle in a careless and reckless manner. Adel McCarter, Rossie Lee Wilson, both Negroes, fined $15 and costs for disturbing the peace by appearing intoxicated in public. Huey P. Faster, Negro, fined $50 and costs for carrying a concealed weapon.

Fires Burn 69 Acres Near Dubach in Week Summary

Two fires burned 69 acres in the Dubach area last week. Frank Gibson, forester, says 45 acres on Continental Can Company land east of Dubach and 24 acres belonging to J. B. Doss were consumed. Twenty acres of Doss land were replanted with pines.

Shuffield Captures Optimist Club Oratorical Trophy

Ronnie Shuffield son of Mr and Mrs W L Shuffield won first place in the Ruston Optimist Club boy's oratorical contest held at the club meeting on April 25 The subject was Optimism Ingredient for True Leadership He will advance to the district contest in Texarkana on May 4 5 and 6 with runners up Chuck Els and Steve Ellis finishing second and third.

Michigan Man Will Address Forestry Group

Warren W. Chase of the University of Michigan will visit Louisiana Tech May 12 and 13 to speak to the North Louisiana Group of Foresters in Reese Hall on the Tech farm at 7 30 p m. His talk on Forest and Game Management on Private Lands will accompany discussions on wildlife management history ecological concepts in forest-wildlife management and training of managers. He will also present illustrated slides on the Michigan deer problem.

FAA plans include Ruston and surrounding airports for expansion

Five northeast Louisiana airports including Ruston are named in the FAA National Airport Plan for 1961. The plan urges improvements such as leasing aircraft, extending runways, improving taxiways and lighting, and adding fencing and approach clearances. Congressman Passman notes the listing implies no federal funding commitment but pledges effort to secure participation where plans are definite and benefits exceed costs.

Defense Rest In Hinton State Trial Given To Jury

Auto-Lec Store Burglarized In Ruston for 100 cash and 200 in checks. Manager W E Wilson Jr appealed to anyone who paid by check Friday or Saturday to contact him. Theft occurred between 8 30 and 10 30 am when a lock was picked and a cashbox was taken from an unlocked safe. One clerk was on duty 9 30 to 10 am. A unidentified Black man seen near the rear looked for boxes. Police found the empty cash box in a pasteboard at the rear.

Winners Announced at Lincoln Parish Farm Bureau Meet

The Lincoln parish Farms Bureau held a large annual meeting and youth night with over 200 members. Seven talent acts and a rally judged top honors in singing and talk meets. Randolpp Posey won singing with Over the Tanbow, while Robert Sims edged Jimmy Rogers in talk. Miss Stephanie Hearne was named Farm Bureau Queen. Six queen contestants were Ruston and Dubach residents. Various piano, vocal, and pantomime entries were also noted. Six resolutions supported national issues including opposition to price controls and farm program proposals.

Walter Savage was elected president of the Ruston Junior Chamber of Commerce and will assume duties July 1, succeeding Charles Barham. Police Jury Buys Blacktop Equipment in Bid Opening

Lincoln Parish Police Jury held a morning special meeting to open bids on road paving gear. Low bidders include Southern Equipment and Tractor for a Self propelled rubber tire roller, Constrution Minelines for an asphalt distributor, Moran Tank Co for an asphalt storage tank, Pro sive Tractor Co for a four wheel tractor with mower, and Early Chevrolet Pontiac Cadillac for a chassis cab truck. A work order for blacktop of ten miles on parish roads by the State Highway Department was approved this week.

Defendents Testify In- Knifing By TOM HERLINE Leader Editor

Four defendants testified in district court as the defense rested around two p m after witnesses including Harold Lee Howard admitted knife use in the March 24 stabbing of star Louisiana Tech football player Joe Hinton. Other defense witnesses included Robert Butler Dr L C Bleich Joe Davis and Willie Goree as the state pressed its case with Deputy Fallin and Gardiner returning to the stand. Howard testified their car tried to pass Hinton’s vehicle three to five times during the incident.

Verdict Returned Against Four in Knife Attack Case

A five man jury found all four defendants guilty of aggravated battery in the knifing of Joe Hinton after 500 minutes deliberation. Defense counsel Joe Guerriero said an appeal would be filed and asked for time to submit a brief. The four defendants remain free on $2,000 bonds each pending appeal.
