Miss Norma Gene Sanders daughter of Mrs. W. H. Sanders of Rusidh married Lt. Colonel Wendell Hines Barnett of Terrell Texas April 2 at Broadmoor Methodist Church Shreveport. Ceremony led by Dr James T Harris included a vocal solo and the couple then hosted a reception at 354 Atlantic Avenue. They departed for Offutt Air Force Base Nebraska where Barnett serves with the Strategic Air Command.
The April Simsboro Home Demonstration Club gathering at Mrs. L. H. Davis home heard reports on Family Life by Mrs. Mullin, Consumer Education by Mrs. Durrett, Housing by Mrs. Best, and Nutrition by Miss Calahan. Refreshments followed and the meeting closed with a prayer by Mrs. Davis.
The Culture Guild met on Thursday April 6 at Mrs Dewey Thummson's home with co hosting by Mrs Huey Williamson. Dr Robert Sharp of the Green Clinic spoke on leukemia, its process, treatment and hopeful future cures. A cancer society award was presented to the guild during the business session, and hosts served cake and toffee to members including Mrs Armstrong Brown Burkhalter Falk Hanks Hay Mogan Kirkland Lewis Mize Napper Pritt Pyburn Reel Sumrall and others.
The Gamma Zeta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held a meeting at the Southern Bell building on April 4 with Dudley Cowan leading a Direct Distance Dialing program. The session demonstrated All Number Calling, included calls to New York and Athens Ohio, and featured a Ritual of Jewels ceremony and pledges joining or extending the sorority.
Dubach H D Club meets at Mrs J L Smith home on April 2 with Mrs C B Colvin as co host. Mrs Charles B Colvin presided in the absence of Mrs C S Fuller and secretary Mrs T C Thall mandr. Members reviewed minutes, discussed cancer fund, and heard park work report from Mrs S T Fuller. Treasurer reported $10 dues paid and $129.67 balance. Colvin distributed literature and led a demonstration titled "Fund for Happier Families" before adjournment and refreshments.
Two engineering students at Louisiana Tech received National Science Foundation fellowships for graduate study. Joel Hebert of Jennings, a mechanical engineering senior, earned $3,000 for 12 months to attend Ohio State University and pursue a master of science degree after earning his Tech bachelor’s in May. Kenny Crump of Haynesville, a senior in electrical engineering, was notified of a 12 month NSF fellowship worth $1,800 and may attend any engineering graduate program. his package also covers tuition and travel.
Baton Rouge LSU education professors Dr. Donald B. Shipp and Dr. C. W. Hilton publish Policies and Regulations of Louisiana School Boards 1959 1960. The 48 page study, aided by 67 districts and the Louisiana Education Research Association, compares superintendents to corporate presidents and highlights board meeting frequencies, 12 month principals, executive committees, substitute pay, and public notices.
Announcement by Mr and Mrs Ben D Riser of Ruston details the engagement and upcoming marriage of Patricia Ellen Riser to Wiley Wilson Hilburn Jr son of Mr and Mrs Wiley W Hilburn of Ruston. The service will be at Temple Baptist Church on Friday June 2 at 730 PM with attendants named and guests invited.
Charles C. Barham will address the Men of the Church at Ruston Presbyterian on Tuesday at 6 30 p m continuing the centennial series on Presbyterian history. His topic is Philadelphia to Ruston. A menu of fried chicken rice and gravy inglish peas hot biscuit butter jelly pie coffee and milk will be served. Tech students are welcome to attend with the supper meeting at 6 30 p m Tuesday.
Carolyn Wallace of Newellson High School won first place in the 10th annual district division of the Louisiana Golden Yam contest at Louisiana Tech. Her yam cheese cake advances to the state contest in Opelousas in October. Second went to Mary Robinson of Grayson High School with yam date bars, taught by Mrs. Evelyn H. Duke. Third was Susan Butler of Arcadia High School with yam delight muffins, guided by Mrs. Vera Madden. Contestants represented Bienville, Caldwell, East Carroll, West Carroll, Tensas and Ouachita parishes. Judges were Mrs. George W. Burnside, Mrs. Sammy Dyson, Mrs. Russell Ferrington of Ruston, and Miss Frances Harrison of Arcadia.
Farmers intending to join the 1961 feed grain program should bring required information to the parish ASC office. L R Skinner says this speeds processing as the parish office establishes a base for corn and grain sorghum on each farm and eligibility for payments by diverting acreage to conservation uses.
Three cases appeared before Judge Fred Jones in City Court. Mathion Shaw was fined $15 and costs for disturbing the peace by appearing intoxicated in public. J. B. Singleton and Nd. Ror Stevenson were fined for similar offenses.
James C. Dooley 79 died morning at Shreveport hospital after a month long illness. A native of Blain Dealt he belonged to the Church of Christ at Tomer. Funeral services were held Saturday at Corinth Baywist Church with Rev. J Post officiating. Burial was at Corinth Cemetery in Dabach under Kilpatrick Funeral home. Survivors include wife Mrs F C Dooley of Womer, two daughters Mrs Bessie Vines of Baton Rouge and Mrs Vena Booth of Shreveport, four sons Farley Dooley of El Dorado Melvin Vines and Paul Vines of Shreveport George Vines of Baton Rouge, one brother Parl Atkins of Texarkana, nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Memorial services for Longstraw cemetery are scheduled for May 7 with Sunday School at 10 am, a memorial sermon at 11 am, lunch at noon, hymn singing after lunch, and an invitation to all interested in the church and cemetery per Mrs Davis Whitman secretary treasurer of the cemetery association.
Dubach reports a 6-0 win over Junction City as the basketball team posts a 16-4 record. Next games loom at home against Spearsville Thursday at 7 30 and Lisbon Saturday. Seniors thank juniors for a banquet and acknowledge a prom after ward. Grammar school 2nd graders enjoyed a Ruston train trip with plants and treats.
Jimmy Dean Broughton of Dubach was elected president of the College of Agriculture at Louisiana State University. He is a forestry major with a 2.0 average and serves as treasurer of the Student Foresters Society and Alpha Zeta. He is a member of the American Society of Foresters, Forest Products Research Society, and Sigma Pi honorary forestry fraternity. He previously led the junior class in Agriculture and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Broughlan of Dubach.
Otis Engineering foreman Mordy Garner of Dallas said high pressure specialist was injured when he fell from a six foot scaffold while pulling pipe after killing a well at a Southwest Gas Producing Company rig three miles southwest of Calhoun. He was taken to St Francis Hospital in Monroe for treatment of a broken hip. The accident occurred around 6 25 p m. and Garner attributed the fall to losing balance on the scaffold above the rig floor.
Mrs. 0. J. Trout of Spencer dies after brief illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Spencer Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Paul Sullivan with Rev. W. A. Massey assisting. Interment in Liberty Cemetery near Linville. Survived by three sons Robert Trout of Ruston EL Fr Trout of Spencer and K Trout of Quincy Mass. one brother Conrad Bailey Monroe. one sister Mrs J T Richmond of Ruston. five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Floyd B. James, Ouachita Valley Council national council representative, of Ruston LA, received the Silver Antelope award for distinguished service to youth regionally. Presented at the Region Five Banquet in New Orleans, he serves on the council executive board and has long aided Scout programs.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Teard have returned from a delightful vacation in Nassau. They stayed as guests at the British Colonial Hotel during their trip.
