Collapse of Alsands project and Alaska pipeline hits Liberal plan

The Alsands megaproject collapse and two-year delay to the Alaska natural gas pipeline undermine Pierre Trudeau's resource export strategy. The piece argues for a shift to a strong Canadian manufacturing base, less foreign ownership, and expanded export financing modeled after Japan and Western Europe. It notes NDP press for ironclad guarantees on the Alaska pipeline, while Liberals and Conservatives voted against, leaving the U.S. with cheap Canadian gas and Canada with uncertain futures.

Manitoba Proclaims National Transportation Week May 30 June 5

Transportation Minister Sam Askiw announces National Transportation Week in Manitoba and outlines safety inspections for large commercial vehicles under a pilot project. The plan, named the critical item inspection, targets brake, steering, wheels and lighting systems to reduce highway accidents. Manitoba cooperates with eight provinces on reciprocal vehicle registration under the Canadian Agreement of Vehicle Registration, noting about 300 carriers have registered over 1,600 interprovincially operated trucks and buses and nearly 4,000 proportional reciprocity permits issued. No non apportioned vehicle identification fees are charged under this plan.
