A 1950 mile undersea voice cable project linking New York and London is about to start. HMS Monarch will lay twin lines from Oban to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia linking to Portland and New York. By 1956 up to 36 calls may run simultaneously, with costs shared by the United States Britain and Canada. The project uses boosters and a copper core cable with polythene insulation, scheduling relief for delays and repairs at sea.
