Imperial Oil show draws large local crowd
A large turnout from town and district attended an Imperial Oil event at Memorial hall last Thursday. The program included the Newfoundland Scene film, Farm Tractor Safety film, and talks by D. J. Hamilton on accident prevention, Don Blaine on lubrication, with Jens Strangeland chairing. Prizes were awarded and George W. Bicknell received a 31 year service pin from Imperial Oil.

Local Delegates Named for Legion Convention
Ralph Robinson and Bob McMurray are the official delegates to the Canadian Legion convention in Flin Flon starting Sunday June 12. Russell Legion held a Tuesday meeting with R M McMurray presiding plan for a July barn dance and a new ping pong table was installed followed by an exercise session. The next meeting is set for Tuesday June 28.

Partridge Named New Principal At Russell School
Russell School Board accepted Mrs. J. D. Robertson's resignation after five and a half years on the board. R. R. Partridge, currently teaching at Melita, will be principal for the next term with Miss Agnes L. Nicholson of Dauphin teaching French and English. G. Leask stays to teach history and other subjects. a science teacher is pending. Mrs. Robertson is the only new staff addition. Meeting attendees included Chairman D. A. Kinney and trustees Chas. Musical Festival Moves to Russell for 1956
Representatives from Russell Binscarth Birtle and Roblin met at Binscarth School on June 2 to plan the 1956 Western Marquette Music Festival. The group decided to hold the festival in Russell next year with a new executive to be chosen soon. President Roy Bray led the meeting with Miss J Fraser as secretary. Attendees from Russell included Mrs E C Sanderson Mrs W G Zwicker Mrs Jim Langford and Miss E Peterson.

District W L Convention Reports At Women's Institute Meeting
Reports from the district convention held at Rossburn were shared at the Women’s Institute meeting on Saturday June 4. Mrs A Bennett and Mrs L Leifer spoke, seven resolutions were read by Mrs T Kieper for provincial convention approval, and the next district convention will be in Roblin with Deepdale and Makaro ff as hosts. Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada won a yearly Adult Education award this year, a painting to be presented at the Winnipeg Wil convention. Seventeen members and one visitor attended, with Mrs J Silver presiding and lunch hosted by Mrs Dawidowski and Mrs R Setter.

Russell's Plowing Match Draws Wide Interest
Interest grows for Russell plowing event to be held at Alex Kieper's farm two miles west of town on No 4 highway in mid June. The Russell Agricultural Society and Chamber of Commerce sponsor the event hoping it becomes an annual fixture with 4-H and open classes. Entries close Saturday noon, with coaching offered the day before by an extension service engineer and a Western Canadian Plowing Match association member. Winners may advance to Portage la Prairie's championship on June 22.

Band booster plans Russell show with Elks support
