More than 200 spectators gathered at Alex Kieper farm to watch eight contestants in Russell's inaugural plowing event co sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and Agricultural Society Judges Mac Brownridge and Dave deWan awarded top honors to Gavin Coulter with seven and a half points Verne Schwalm and Bruce Mintenko followed close behind Other top finishers were Garry Schwalm Angus Coulter and David Coulter Open class saw George Radford beat Elgin Wishart Radford earned best finish while Schwalm claimed best crown The organizers lauded the effort and invited participation next year A post event fund drive assisted a member heading to Portage and praise went to Dick Wheatley and the organizing committee for success

The postponed Russell public school field day completed Tuesday with Donald Shipp scoring 24 points to lead all participants. Margaret Berg led girls with 20 points. Group winners across grades 1 to 8 included multiple students such as Chris Robertson, Freddie Clement, Cleo Sharpe, Ricky Wishart, Diana Dunsmore, Beverley Kennedy, Don Shipp and Kent Warman among others.

Eleven events are set daily at the Russell fair with a new special green horse running event. The show ring will feature light horse classes including ponies and hackneys, while machinery row returns alongside top purebred livestock offerings to please all patrons.
D R McDougald of Royal Bank dies at 64
Daniel R McDougald former manager of the Royal Bank of Canada in Russell died suddenly in Regina on June 7 aged 64 after returning from Florida with Mrs McDougald. He was to take charge of the Lumsden branch on June 9 and funeral services were held at Neepawa with burial there. He leaves two sons Glen and Ross and was active in community affairs and sports.
