In Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, PPL linemen declare political campaigns an occupational hazard. They ask candidates to assist in stopping the practice of tacking and stapling placards to service poles. Tacks and staples often fail under a lineman’s spurs, risking falls.
United Fund plans a two show Grand Ole Opry at Roswell High School gym on October 18 with 7 9 pm performances. Tickets 2 dollars adults 1 dollar children proceeds over 1550 split with United Fund.
The 34th annual ENM State Fair opens with a parade scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday Oct 9 along Main Street in Roswell. Float entries are accepted through Oct 6 contact Bob Dixon.
In district court Judge George T. Harris saw three guilty pleas among nine arraignments. Benjamin Cloud 20 admitted taking a car without consent and defrauding with two sentences. Domingo Fuentes 21 pleaded larceny from a dwelling with a three month to three year term. Robert Hundhauser 18 admitted auto theft with a suspended sentence revoked. sentences 1 to 5 years on each count concurrent.
Work continued yesterday on repairing the rear parking lot of Southwestern Public Service Co at 415 N Richardson Ave. Nearby the city hall driveway has been marked with two improvised no parking signs read between signs with the last two words removed.
Joseph Baca, 6, died from injuries after his bicycle swerved into a truck. The incident raises Albuquerque's homicide year-to-date totals to 277, compared with 252 at the same point last year.
A Senate subcommittee questioned Olen F. Featherstone of Roswell and Denver over filing only part of the required Mineral Leasing Act reports. The hearing examined lease practices, with officials noting limits on federal land in one state and the total acreage Featherstone could control. Featherstone claimed he never exceeded legal acreage and blamed managers for filing notices while aides defended the extent of filings.
The New Mexico Military Institute holds the first regimental retreat of the year this afternoon on the North Parade Ground. Acting Regimental Commander is Cadet Captain Alfred F. Howden of Roswell. The regiment has two battalions, four companies each, and the ninth company is the Headquarters Band with about 60 musicians. Public invited. adjutant's call is 4:45 p.m.
Two red haired entrants join the Yucca Theatre pageant next Saturday for the Eastern New Mexico Fair Queen contest. Marie Lynn McBride and Frankie Cooper seek the crown as judges rate beauty and poise in bathing suit appearances.
The Supreme Court starts a new term amid challenges from school desegregation and anti Communist statutes. Justices will hear appeals on California Communist leaders and the Smith Act provisions, with more racial cases expected through the nine month term.
Estes Kefauver and Gov. John F. Simms will headline a campaign stop in Roswell on Tuesday as part of a state wide tour. Simms also spoke at Taos and Albuquerque events, then prepared for rallies in Espanola and Oklahoma City with Kefauver joining in Roswell Los Alamos and Albuquerque.
The county clerk's office will stay open 9 a.m. to noon next Saturday Oct 6 and yesterday for voter registration. It will also remain open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday Oct 2. Registration deadline is Oct 8 with the general election on Nov 6.
President Anastasio Somoza died in Gorgas Hospital Panama Canal Zone from gunshot wounds. His son Luis, 34, was named by Congress to fill the unexpired term ending next May and to serve as acting president. The younger son Anastasio Jr., 32, is tasked with keeping power in the family.
Roswell attorney Charles D. Harris will travel to Washington D C to present one of his papers at a four day symposium on water allocation problems. Sponsored by The Conservation Foundation the event runs Oct 3 to 7 with Harris delivering Thursday morning. His 25 page paper is titled Water Allocation Under the Appropriation Doctrine in the Lea County Underground Basin of New Mexico with the subtitle Flexible Approach to the Doctrine of Prior Appropriation. Harris serves as special attorney for the State Engineer.
