Gambling raid at fairgrounds ends with fines and seizures
Sheriff Shadetree Jones and New Mexico Police raided a tent at the Eastern New Mexico fairgrounds Friday night. Three men faced gambling charges and signed over 119 dollars to charity. Two Roswell Officers Run Down Negro
Roswell police officers J. E. Polson and Richard Garcia chased and captured Willie Carpenter after a seven block pursuit around 8:45 p.m. He was taken into custody and turned over to Sheriff J. C. Jones. Hunger drove his actions, as he admitted not eating since Monday. A large group of lawmen participated in the extended manhunt, including state patrol, deputies, and Roswell officers. Carpenter was apprehended near Sixth Street and Avenue.

A Junior Livestock sale at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair netted 18369.27 with averages 38 cents per pound for 27 calves 42 cents for 27 porkers and 87 cents for 55 lambs. The Southeastern New Mexico Ram Growers Association Sale added 2664 for about 150 rams. Bud Medlin paid 225 for five Debouillet lamb rams. top price 235 per pound for a blue ribbon lamb shown by Larry Hobson of Roswell.
