A 202nd Coast Artillery Illinois National Guard unit with 206 men and six officers camped at 19th and Washington after a last night stay. Local cafes fed the troops while a temporary water line was laid to the camp.

Roswell high school boys show strong interest in a voluntary military training unit organized by Thomas B. Irvin. The second drill at the high school gymnasium had 44 students, some from Junior high, with no school sponsorship though it has school sanction. Lt James Mason assists in training and the unit aims to align with the national defense program.
Wilford Pratt, formerly of Roswell, left New York for Canada to join the Canadian Royal Air Force as a volunteer. He was accepted and this move is reported to his mother, Mrs. F. E. Chartier of Hobbs. Pratt had been in the printing trade, working with A. E. Elmore and running a Hobbs print shop for four years.
A children's story hour will be held at the Carnegie Library tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock with Mrs Jason Kellahin in charge.

The Associated Press reports Dempsey gains from recounts in Socorro and Valencia counties totaling 187 votes. Gains include 60 in Santa Fe, 53 in Bernalillo, 9 in Valencia, 40 in Socorro, and 20 in San Miguel. Chavez’s Santa Fe total fell by 78. Attys claim ballots may have been marked by the same person.
On the Willkie train bound for Madison Willkie argued that if the two term tradition should hold it is now. He warned that the Democratic way of life may not survive and that a strong leader could risk dictatorship as power concentrates.
Carlsbad New Mexico September 27 Officers sought today the assailant of Matt Mikkeen a 47 year old potash miner fatally beaten last night or early this morning as he slept in his apartment. A intruder cut through a screen door and entered the kitchen and the miners head was slashed. Friends report his wife expected soon from Portland Oregon officials could not contact her. A miner returning from a midnight shift heard sounds and found Mikkeen writhing on the floor. He died shortly after arrival at a hospital.
Germany Italy and Japan formed a ten year military and economic pact pledging aid to each other against outside interference. Tokyo denied entering Europe while warning the United States to stay out of the war as Berlin signed in a chancelry ceremony. Hitler witnessed the signing and the pact stressed mutual assistance if any power attacks one of the trio or their aims.
