Colorful ENM State Fair parade signs bands and floats

A dozen bands and five floats plus four probable entries are signed for the Eastern New Mexico State Fair parade. Roswell High, Roswell North and South Junior Highs head the high school bands with participants from Coronoa, Dexter, Fort Sumner, Hagerman, Hobbs, Pojoaque, Portales, Ruidoso and Santa Rosa. Floats include Roswell Assistance League and Roswell Education Assn. plus Town & Country Beauty Salon, Trinity Methodist Youth Fellowship and Worley Mobile Homes.

Finance Director Demands Reimbursement from Armory Fund

Santa Fe finance director says the state will seek about 690 dollars drawn on the Santa Fe Armory Board. The money allegedly paid expenses for New Mexico National Guard officers at a 1954 National Guard Assn. convention in Miami. The attorney general's office requested the repayment and consideration of paying officers or via a trust fund set up by former adjutant general C. G. Sage. Earlier about 2400 dollars was recovered from the fund for two other conventions.

Kids Tour Day Planned at Walker AFB with Kiwanis Co Sponsorship

Walker Air Force Base will host a Kids Day with 9 12 and 12 15 year olds bused from Roswell High School. Maj Ed Linder will supervise two tours starting at 7 45 am and 1 00 pm with base operations at 8 00 am and 1 00 pm for base residents. Both tours include aircraft displays crash fire station link trainer water survival the MARS radio station and a parade ground refreshment break with a Corps of Drums and a Change of Command finale.

Inquest Planned in Death of Dr J J Walker

An inquest was scheduled for 3 45 p m today in Justice R Perry Bean's court for Dr J J Walker 74 of 2118 Pennsylvania Ave found dead at home by Mrs Walker. Police Chief Tommy Thompson said death appeared caused by a revolver wound in a personal safety case.

Joslin Captured in Texas City After Escape

Ross Helm Joslin 21 of Leming Texas was captured by FBI agents and city detectives in San Antonio after escaping from the Santa Fe jail. He hitchhiked from Santa Fe to El Paso then rode a bus to San Antonio. Four others who escaped with him were captured. one remains at large. All face federal escape and rescue law charges.

Paratroopers Enter Central High as Nine Negroes Arrive

Hard eyed troops in battle dress brought nine Negro students to Central High School in Little Rock amid ongoing integration clashes. A man was clubbed and another stabbed in the arm during fights as students moved inside and authorities tried to keep the area clear.

Sergeant Prefers 90 Days Sentenced Over Marine Prison

Marine Sgt Richard K Battershell of Camp Pendleton was sentenced to 30 days for cashing five forged checks totaling 625 dollars. He told Municipal Judge Beach Vasey he would prefer 90 days to avoid a possible bad conduct discharge and a Marine Corps court martial. The judge granted the request.

Hoffa Indicted On Perjury Counts In Wiretap Probe

James R Hoffa union leader and potential Teamsters president is charged with five counts of perjury in a grand jury probe into alleged wiretapping at Teamster headquarters in Detroit. Benjamin Collins is charged with twelve counts of perjury related to the same inquiry. The United Nations General Assembly keeps Red China out for another year amid India and Soviet bloc opposition by a 47 27 7 vote.

Six cars prowled as police urge precautions

Police Chief Tommy Thompson urged residents to lock their cars and remove valuable items after three more car prowls were reported this morning. Victims included Brad Watkins who lost socket wrenches worth 100 dollars, Chris Wyatt who had Fender skirts stolen, and E A Roberts who reported a suit and paints missing from a car behind the Nickson Hotel.

Funds Grow for Teresa Aldinger Trip to Baltimore

Contributions from St. Peter's and St. John's schools First Methodist Men's Club Roswell Ellis Ledge and O. L. Bullock pushed the Teresa Aldinger Fund to 3134.98 for a blind five year old's surgery and care in Baltimore. Teresa and her mother Mrs. Leon Aldinger left with a private plane equipped with a bed for the journey.

Laborer Awarded 2200 Compensation in District Court

George A Miller, laborer, won a $2200 settlement from Malco Refineries and American Employers Insurance Co in a district court case. He suffered injuries at Artesia on Oct 14 1956 and again at Roswell on Aug 15 while hauling gasoline hose. Miller’s average weekly wage was $50, with $200 going to his lawyer.

Life Insurance Benefits Paid in New Mexico Reach 7.66 Million

The Institute of Life Insurance reports life insurance payments to living policy holders in New Mexico totaled 7,662,000 last year. The agency accounted for 56 percent of the state's total life insurance benefit payments to families.
