Test flights of the Matador TM-76A medium range missiles began from the Air Force Missile Development Center in Alamogordo to a Wendover Utah range. Two jet escort planes can assume control or destroy the missiles if needed during the 375 nautical mile corridor.
Hobbs New Mexico pilot Rex Murdock 58 and his wife escaped injury after landing a small plane on a Hobbs driving range while low on fuel. Police say Murdock lost his way en route from Detroit to Terterboro Airport and signaled for guidance before landing on Eagle Rock Avenue Prospect Avenue area. The left wing was knocked off when the plane struck a light pole. A Missile Center spokesman discussed Matador missile testing outside restricted areas, noting its development stage and tactical use.
A six county district meeting in Roswell today and tomorrow will discuss problems with George Crane of the State Welfare Department and Mary Grace O'Hara. Meetings are at the Chaves county welfare office with attendees including county welfare directors Lara Heath Ross Chaves Lorinda Taylor Eddy Irene Smith Lea Bessie Bonnie Fayil Quay and Fred Massey Curry Arizona Kieley Roosevelt counties.
A parade and final review are planned at 4 p.m. on Walker AFB parade grounds to honor retiring Commander Col. George W. Porter. Col. James V. Reardon will assume command Monday. Reardon, born in Boston on April 13 1916, is a former 47th Air Division Director of Operations.

The Little Rock Nine entered Central High under Army guard as paratroopers from the 161st Airborne Division escorted a man, 2nd Lt. Sidney Wolff of Lackland AFB, carrying a .38 revolver and a .30-30 rifle in his trunk. Students and guards observed the tense scene while attendance rose and outposts protected the routes to the school.
Santa Fe reporters describe moves to seat Charles Williams of Gallup as state highway commissioner from District 3 amid a four month deadlock. Sheriff Wilson presented a senators poll showing 22 of 25 in favor of Williams. three Democrats abstained. The commission paused as Heimann thanked Wilson and promised fair consideration.

District attorney Pat Hanagan says a discretionary ruling from New Mexico Attorney General Fred Standley allows county commissioners to decide whether to call a partition election for precincts one and two after a 50 voter petition. An opinion noted that such a split would require elected justices of the peace for the new precincts. The October 7 meeting was set to review the issue.
