The United States liner President Harding arrived after a hurricane shattered voyage. Twenty six seriously hurt were removed on stretchers, 73 injured overall, and cabin boy Pat Johnson washed overboard and lost. The ship docked with the captain flag at half mast for the drowned youth.

Three separate expeditions tackle ancient routes and sites across the Southwest. Gallup explorer Roman Hubbell probes a rumored Escalante trail guided by Navajo legends while Dr. George Hammond leads a second group seeking 1776 Miera y Pacheco inscriptions. Hurd Paintings Exhibit Closes Sunday at Roswell Museum

Sunday afternoon, October 22, marks the last day of the Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth Hurd exhibition at Roswell Museum Art Center. The show features portraits by Mrs Hurd and landscapes and an egg tempera portrait by Peter Hurd, plus a Peter Hurd lithograph. The two artists, prominent in America, with works in the San Francisco Fair and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibit also includes California woven tapestries with photos of the weaving process. The Hurd display ends Monday while the tapestry show continues for two weeks.

The goal is ten thousand dollars for the Salvation Army and Boy and Girl Scouts, based on careful study of the organizations’ needs. An honor roll will record firms whose entire staff contributes.
