Three Roswell boys received the Arrow of Light highest Cub Scouting honor. The feature notes the ceremony and the local recognition on page 7.
President Carter will hold a sub two hour meeting with western governors in Albuquerque to discuss water and energy policy. An early rally and a private breakfast with Gov. Bruce King and Mayor David Rusk will precede the events as gates open for the public rally at Kirtland AFB. The WESTPO plan seeks federal aid and streamlined programs to boost energy production in the West. Carter’s stop marks the fourth presidential visit to New Mexico in 30 years following Eisenhower Kennedy and Nixon.
Cuba’s ambassador to the United Nations said President Fidel Castro will travel to the United States this week to address the UN General Assembly. A UN spokesman noted Castro would attend as leader of the non aligned bloc, with dates not yet set.
The Roswell Polo Club defeated San Patricio 4 2 in the George Wilson Memorial Polo Tournament. Roswell players Phelps Anderson Robert B. Anderson Kit Collins and Louie Nalda each scored a goal. The event supported the Roswell Girls Club and drew spectators for a hard fought, well received contest anchored by historic ties to polo in the Hondo Valley and San Patricio.
At Greater Cincinnati Airport a twin engine Navajo Piper lost an engine on takeoff for Nashville. Nine killed, two fatally injured later, two transported to Booth Hospital Florence Kentucky. Fire officials reported initial fear of hazardous chemicals, later revealed to be molasses.
At Hogle Zoo Kali the elephant snatched a shopper's purse from a divider near Kali's cage as a group including Mrs. Sandack and her relatives fed the animal. Kali swallowed the purse and contents before returning some items. the owner later planned to file an insurance claim.

A Swissair DC8 overshot Athens airport runway and crashed into a golf course leaving 14 dead and 14 injured. Among the 154 aboard were two Americans including Prof. Hans Morgenthau. Nuclear isotopes were recovered from the wreckage and radiation tests conducted on responders.
