More than 100 lawmen from six counties search rugged terrain for two hitchhikers linked to the shooting death of Lincoln County deputy Tommy Bedford near Bonito Lake. Bedford, 27, was found shot as backup deputies arrived. suspects described as car thieves in Albuquerque remain at large.
Deputy Tommy Bedford was shot near Bonito Lake as authorities expanded a manhunt for two suspects. Roadblocks in the Ruidoso and Nogal Canyon area blocked highways amid a large search effort with local, state, and helicopter teams. Bedford’s body was flown to the state medical examiner in Santa Fe.
Manslaughter by negligence charges were filed against Capt. Fritz Schmutz after the Swissair DC-8 skidded on a rain slick runway at Hellenikon airport. The crash killed 14, injured 10, and revealed radioactive isotopes in cargo. One American aboard was Hans Morgenthau. the other American passenger was unnamed.
