Harold Chan dier, 31, fined $10 for assault and battery after swatting at a fly in a Detroit restaurant. His swat allegedly hit no fly but caused near- disruption, nearly toppling Frieda Mooney 25. A scuffle followed as Fred Boone 35 disputed Chan dier’s account. Judge Elvin L. Davenport imposed the fine.
In Maebashi Japan two more farmers Gumpei Sakai and Hatsuo Mihara testified that GI William S. Girard fired at brass scavengers on a firing range during an Army practice. They corroborated earlier witnesses while noting hazy memories and warning signs on the risky firing zone.
Secretary of the Army Robert Brucker rejects accusations of unnecessary force in Little Rock. He cites the Blake case and says a soldier resisted an assault and retained his rifle while others alleged bayonets at throats. He notes no warrants issued and stresses soldiers act only when absolutely necessary.
Susan Martin 7 and Diane Martin 2 suffered bruises in a two car crash in the 300 block of North Richardson at 3 58 p m. yesterday. They rode in a 1954 Buick coach driven by Martha C. Martin 37 of 1615 Mesa Dr. The other car a 1957 Mercury sedan driven by Elvis H Bennett 93 of Box 121 Rt 1. Mercury damage right front 200 dollars. Buick left rear 150 dollars. Wrecker towed Mercury. Buick left at scene.
Herb Henley reports his 1948 Oldsmobile stolen from a parking place at Glover recreation hall near North Garden during the National Newspaper Week banquet of the Elks. The car was later found a half block away. Attendees included Joe Purdy exalted ruler and Lake J. Frazier as main speaker.
The 24th and final shot in the current test series is rescheduled to 5 a.m. tomorrow at the Atomic Test Site after today’s postponement due to winds.
Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Hoover and Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Hughes hosted a reception, welcoming guests and marking a milestone in their social circle. Attendees included family and local residents.

Roswell youngsters won top honors at the 90th New Mexico State Fair Junior Sheep Show in Albuquerque. Dickie Ogaz from Hatch earned grand champion fat lamb with multiple breed wins, while Richard Willis of Ft Sumner took reserve grand champion fat lamb. Multiple 4 H and FFA members from Roswell, Clovis, Texico, and Santa Fe captured division titles in Fine Wool, Hampshire Suffolk, Southdown Shropshire crosses, and Breeding Sheep. New Mexico 4-H and Future Farmers of America youth sold 108 head of prize livestock at the State Fair auction as the exposition neared closing. Buyers, including local businessmen, bid on 36 calves 36 lambs and 36 hogs after a week of junior livestock shows. The Dairy Cattle Show wrapped up with Jerseys and Brown Swiss judged. The cutting horse contest kicked off with finals slated tonight and the Roy Rogers show and rodeo scheduled for 8 p.m. Tomorrow is Boy and Girl Scout Day Fiesta Day and a Baton Twirling Contest. Sunday marks the fair’s final day with Horse Show events and handicaps on the schedule.
James R Hoffa defeated two Chicago opponents by a wide margin to become president of the Teamsters Union amid ongoing scandal. With about two thirds of delegates reporting, Hoffa led with 878 votes to 192 for William A Lee and 98 for Thomas J Haggerty. He plans to assume the post Oct 15 and pledges to fight to remain in the AFL CIO, while current investigations continue into union misdeeds.
In Warsaw protesters clashed with riot police and worker militia in the first major demonstration against Poland's leaders since Gomulka. Tear gas and truncheons drove about 2,000 youths to a student boarding house. several students were arrested as order was restored.
Strategic Air Command received Guam radio reports that a C47 transport crash landed after takeoff from Iwo Jima. All aboard were rescued with no injuries. Engine trouble blamed for the crash. 13 passengers included author James A. Michener.
Washington announces a round the world air flight crossing both poles in honor of the late Adm. Richard E. Byrd. Cmdr. Frederick G. Dustin USN of Washington, an Antarctic veteran, says the nonstop hop schedule will depart Boston around November 10 and is financed by a group of businessmen.
The United Nations planned to urge the General Assembly to back Western disarmament plans by directing the Disarmament subcommittee to restart negotiations on the Western framework. Informed diplomats said the United States would oppose amendments backing Indian Japanese and Soviet test suspension proposals. The West insists on a simultaneous Soviet conversion of all atomic production to peaceful uses under international supervision before halting nuclear tests.
National Guardsmen escorted nine Negro students into Central High School for the 10th day of integration in Little Rock. About 100 whites gathered at the entrance with a few Confederate flags but no jeering. Sixteen rifle carriers and four Army paratroopers ensured safe entry.
The blotter notes Earl Worley 33 fined 125 dollars for no driver license. A crowded week left 30 cases on docket as federal troops and 101st Airborne paratroopers again took charge at a desegregation scene in Little Rock. Guardsmen stayed on campus while eight Negroes attended. Governor Faubus received cheers at Blytheville during the National Cotton Picking Contest parade.
