President Eisenhower described Gov. Orval Faubus as a mistaken man doing a disservice to his city and state. He cited two avenues of hope for pulling troops out of Little Rock as he addressed news reports on the evolving crisis.
At a news conference President Eisenhower outlined conditions to end federal troop enforcement of school integration in Little Rock and warned that court decisions must be upheld. He cautioned against preferring motives and noted a four-governor committee seeks a solution. He also addressed Syria, Teamsters corruption, and defense spending.
About 75 white students walked out of Central High School in Little Rock amid a mass protest against racial integration. Guardsmen blocked the crowd as demonstrators faced jeers while a girl hung a crude Negro effigy. Negro students entered with troop escort earlier. one white girl fell ill. police and guards remained posted outside the campus as tensions rose.

Gary Tryant Charlie Phillips Johnny Mathis and Margaret Lewis also perform with Horton featuring Roy Davis updates. Advance tickets are on sale at local outlets with adults five cents and children fifty cents.
Roswell City Schools will be closed all day Wednesday October 9 for the fair parade and opening day. Classes resume Thursday. The Board of Education says the holiday honors cooperation with fair officials and the fair as an educational experience for children.

Wanda West, 2, suffered a head wound and facial injuries when struck near 802 E Bland St by a backing 1957 Chevrolet. Mas Zelma St Clair, 43, was hit in the 400 block of North Richardson, injuring her right arm and back as a 1955 Buick struck her. Both were taken to the Medical Center.
New Mexico reports 574 influenza cases last week, totaling 3,748 for the year. Most cases are among school children in Tierra Amarilla and Santa Cruz, though officials caution some may not be influenza and the Asian variant remains unconfirmed by the Health Department.
Roswell youngsters dominated the Junior Sheep Show at the State Fair. Susan Bradley showed the champion fine wool lamb and the champion Hampshire lamb after winning a first place fat calf earlier. Donna Smith exhibited the champion white faced lamb.
Police were told yesterday by Don Keltner that two shotguns and a .30-06 Remington rifle were stolen from his home at 1710 North Washington Avenue. The rifle featured a 4 power Bughnell scope and was among the missing items.
At Walker Air Force Base all military personnel are being given the Asian Flu vaccine after an official ISO release. Maj. Ed Linder stated the base hospital has seen a moderate seasonal increase in in patient census not attributed to Asian Flu, and no definite diagnoses have been made on any cases.
Thomas Hickey of New York withdraws as a candidate for the Teamster presidency in favor of William A. Lee of Chicago. The move narrows the field to Lee and James R. Hoffa as voting for officers begins amid talks of a possible court challenge and AFL-CIO relations.
