A Roswell facility begins three and a half month demolition to clear space for a $1 million reverse osmosis water plant. Whitcamp Salvage breaks down the old 10 year old flash distillation plant, expected to yield over $8,000 in government credits and recycled steel.

Whitcamp Salvage and Box Crane and Rigging Service, both of Roswell, lead the 10 year project after research and fresh water production ended.
The Governor's Council on Criminal Justice Planning and the New Mexico Law Enforcement Planning Commission Region II announced expenditures for southeastern communities. Highlights include 47 639 for Chaves County Boys Home expansion, 22 637 to Roswell Police to hire three officers and promote three detectives, 230 400 to Otero County for a new female and juvenile correctional facility, plus smaller grants for Ruidoso Cloudcroft and bilingual probation work.
The document lists 1973 allocations to law enforcement and county departments in Region II, including Las Cruces Police, Hobbs PD, Silver City, Lea County Sheriff's, Otero County, Dona Ana County, and Carlsbad Police. Total regional funding reaches 516,859 for 1973, with a cumulative southern county total of 1,408,875 since August 1970. The council noted over seven million in proposals and 2,337,000 available statewide for 1973.
United Continental Corp plans 15 000 to 17 000 acre Buena Vida subdivision five miles west of Roswell with 1 200 acres 1 166 sites for single family homes in first phase. A clubhouse pool and recreation area are planned with future restaurant and commercial options.
Roswell City Police Chief L. M. Hall says he will refuse a Governor's Council on Criminal Justice Planning grant because it lasts only one year. He has notified City Councilman L. C. Stiles that funds should instead be directed to the New Mexico Military Institute Security Division and to the cities of Tatum and Lovington.
In Albuquerque, State Sen. John Conway edged Sen. William Sego 7-5 on four ballots to become minority leader. Rep. Thomas Hoover was re-elected House minority leader, while Sen. John Irick and Rep. Colin McMillan were named minority whip in their chambers. Dems plan to elect leaders in Santa Fe for the 1973 session beginning Jan. 16.
More than 650 students from Southeastern New Mexico gather at Roswell High School to audition for the 1973 all-state bands and choruses. 437 vocal and 225 instrumental tryouts are scheduled with university judges, leading to about 800 selected for the January festival in Albuquerque.
