Heavy Snow Hits Northern New Mexico and Arizona

A widespread winter storm, fueled by a westward cold front, dumps heavy snow across northern New Mexico and the extreme southwest. Six inches fall on mountain roads near Rodeo Douglas, with snow plows deployed on major highways in Colfax and Union counties. Snow also blankets northeastern Arizona near Winslow. the National Weather Service in Albuquerque predicts colder conditions tonight and Sunday with snowfall easing tonight and clear weather expected Sunday.

Nine Sentenced In District Court

Nine persons convicted or pleading guilty were sentenced by district Judge James B. McGhee this week. Henry Clayton Clark 90 days for assault with a deadly weapon. Thomas Shipley 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years for forgery. Sanford I. Osbourn 5 to 7 years under habitual criminal act. B. Turner 3 to 5 years for embezzlement and bad checks. Jack Chancey and Earl Martin 3 months for giving liquor to minors and 11 to 12 months for abduction. Ed Ehret 1 to 2 years for grand larceny. John Narmore 90 days for assault with a deadly weapon. H. P. Edmondson 45 days for selling liquor without a license. Jefferson E. York acquitted of assault with a weapon. Two civil cases settled. jury excused.

Radio messages report two British ships and a Swedish freighter torpedoed about 400 miles off the Irish coast. The Anten remained afloat after taking survivors from the Tymeric aboard. Four More Chaves County Volunteers To Leave Monday

Four Chaves County volunteers announced by the local selective service board will depart Monday for Fort Bliss to be inducted. Names include John Edward Johns age 21 of Roswell, Charley Banes Walker age 31 of Roswell, Willard Claudell Rowin age 24 of Roswell Route 2, and Luther Rice Callahan age 26 of Roswell Hotel. They depart at 1 15 pm by bus, completing the county quota of six men under the first call.

State employs flunk merit exams seek dismissal plan

In Albuquerque on November 29 the state merit system commission announced eligible registers will be set from about 300 of 400 exams. Dismissal for those failing to register will take effect December 15. Affected locations include Las Vegas insane asylum, Raton miners' hospital, Springer industrial school, Las Lunas mental detectives school, Albuquerque girls welfare home, Hot Springs Carrie Tingley hospital, state police, and ports of entry.
