A powerful earthquake triggers widespread death and destruction across multiple towns. Thousands are reported dead or injured as fires rage through oil refineries and infrastructure, signaling a catastrophic blow to Germany wartime efforts.
Athens reports Greek radio says Italian invaders have been defeated in all sectors and retreating toward Albania after 15 days of bitter fighting. The high command says Alpine Centaur division annihilated, with gains in the Pindus mountains and along the Kalamas river, while Italy’s left wing collapses near Koritza.
A winter storm's first major thrust hit the Rocky Mountain and Plains states with sub zero cold, winds, snow and sleet. Lewistown Montana recorded twenty one degrees below zero and Utahs Wasatch Mountains saw two and a half feet of snow. Garden City Kansas reported a 50 mile per hour wind and Dallas Texas faced drenching rain. Colorado endured one fatality and several injuries from automobile wrecks as Denver cooled from 58 to 15 degrees in a day.
Bob Crosby of Roswell defeated George Weir of Hobbs in a steer roping match at Cavalcade Park Carlsbad New Mexico roping ten Mexican steers in 2 57 2 4. The event drew about 4 000 fans and banked an estimated 50 000 in wagers. Crosby’s time was deemed an unofficial all time world record for the event.
Civil Aeronautics Administration plans survey of at least five New Mexico sites including Albuquerque Carlsbad Las Vegas Roswell and Santa Fe as part of a 40 million dollar nationwide effort to create defense airports. Proposed improvements split among sites aim to upgrade several to Class 3 or 4 airport status with strips 3500 to 4500 feet long.
Richard E. Manson 32 year old assistant federal district attorney died Saturday in Santa Fe from pneumonia after an emergency appendectomy. Services were held at Sacred Heart Church. Survived by parents Mrs and Mr Edward L Manson of Clovis wife and young daughter Eloise sister Beth Manson a student at New Mexico University. Governor Miles and state officials attended the obit notes.
London reports Neville Chamberlain died Saturday. Plans for a public memorial service, possibly at Westminster Abbey, are being arranged. The former British prime minister, who led Britain from Munich through early World War II, resigned May 10 after the Norway withdrawal and left his last cabinet post.
Roswell Boy Scouts observe Armistice Day with a public Court of Honor in the district court room at 7 30 tonight. All parents and friends invited. Eagle Scout Ray Long to receive the Eagle Bronze Palm. Awards noted for best attendance and best advancement.

Catrino Cardona, 19, is held in the county jail on allegations of stabbing his stepfather Es tanislado Cardona at 4 30 Sunday morning in the latter’s home at 700 East Tilden. Charges are not yet filed as police await the wounded man’s condition. the physician reports he would leave the hospital today. Cardona allegedly came to the house in a drunken state and stabbed him in bed in the upper abdomen.
The northwest wind peaked at 43 miles per hour for one minute and 38 mph for five minutes, with no reported damage. Yesterday’s high was 64 and a sub freezing 31 last night. The forecast remains cold tonight and Tuesday as Continental Air Line flights report variable operations in light of the weather.
London reports a British air victory with five Italian bombers and three fighters shot down as Axis raiders strike coastally in Armistice day air alerts. The ministry notes ten additional German planes were downed by 3 p.m. Italian raids are described by Il Giornale D Italia as a tremendous bombardment of England and its allies.
Johnny Schnedar won the annual Armistice Day soap box derby on North Richardson hill before a crowd. He took a $3.50 cash prize, with Junior Oracion and Billy Schnedar tied for second at $2.25 each, Theodore Oracion fourth at $1.50, and LeRoy Walker fifth at $1. A special race awarded merchandise and cash prizes to the top four finishers. The event was sponsored by the local American Legion post with C. M. Cooper in charge and police assistance from Blackney and Keller.

Reno Nevada plans for funeral of United States Senator Key Pittman aged 68, longtime Democrat and chairman of foreign relations, who collapsed after a hard campaign and died early yesterday. He was reelected to a sixth Senate term and will lie in state in the Nevada state building Thursday.
President Roosevelt led Armistice Day ceremonies at Arlington Cemetery near Washington, predicting that nations under dictators will not return to ancient slavery but will rise in rebellion. He urged unity and resolve as America observes the fallen and honors the soldiers who served.
Rev and Mrs L Bowman Craven returned last night from El Paso where he officiated at the wedding of Miss Theda Joyce Ferguson and Sigfred Erickson at Asbury Methodist Church The bride is the daughter of lifelong friend Mr and Mrs Scott Ferguson They traveled via Pecos Texas where Craven preached Sunday for the visiting pastor Rev M F Hill
