Explosions Strike U S Plants Leaving Dozens Dead

A series of blasts hit three plants in the northeast minus Tokyo style. At Woodbridge New Jersey United Railway and Signal and two other sites Burton Powder Works Edinboro Pennsylvania Trojan Powder Allentown Pennsylvania. Early tallies counted five killed at Woodbridge and three at Edinboro with additional deaths reported. Authorities noted several dozen injured with many in critical condition. Defense orders unclear for United Railway and Signal. other firms held none.

Frank McCarthy Weighs Speaker Run For House Seat

Arthur J Salter a former Roswell resident died Sunday at his home in Redondo Beach California His brother Robert P Salter of Roswell and Mrs Salter left this morning to attend the funeral services Salter left Roswell about 1930 He had been a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Examiner for the past eight or ten years He was a World War veteran His wife and four children survive

Red Cross Annual Roll Call Opens Thursday in Roswell

Successful Fire School Held Here

The Roswell local fire department completed a week long forcible entry and ladder work course led by Carl Ehrick, former Las Vegas fire chief. The state wide program costs the city $30 this year and aims to run five years with two subjects annually. Ehrick will next teach in Carlsbad then Hobbs, while Artesia requests a postponement until its new fire truck arrives.

Elks Official To Visit Local Roswell Lodge

R. S. Sensanbaugher of Silver City district deputy grand exalted ruler of New Mexico Elks will visit the Roswell Elks Lodge tonight. A dinner meeting and initiation start at 5 30 with the principal address by Mr. Sensanbaugher. Earl Brown president of the Elks state association will attend and speak. Roswell Boy Wounded in Hunting Accident

Jack Garrett, fifteen, son of Mr and Mrs Lester Garrett of Roswell, was shot when his shotgun discharged during a hunting trip with his father. Approximately fifteen pellets struck his left shoulder, breaking the arm bone. He was treated at St Marys hospital.

Body of Missing Child Found in Woods Near Cartersville

Murray Upshaw Jr. two year old who vanished Friday was found dead in woods near his north Georgia mountain home. State troopers and safety commissioner Lon Sullivan offered no cause of death. Neighbor Joel Parker found the body while with a search party and directed police to the scene.

First Call For Men From Chaves County

The first call for men from Chaves county under selective service was issued for six men to be inducted for one year. Recruits must report November 20 at Fort Bliss Texas at 9 am. transportation by bus. Volunteers may join ahead of Order Number 1 and must be Class 1-A eligible.

Warmer Weather For New Mexico Forecast

The U S Weather Bureau in Albuquerque forecast a gradual rise in temperatures today and Wednesday after New Mexico endured a second night of subfreezing readings. One accident occurred as a result of the cold snap when Raymond Huff in Clayton narrowly escaped injury after his car overturned on an icy highway en route to the Clayton Rat on game. Santa Fe deer hunter Dr Anthony Reymont wandered 24 hours in near zero temps in the Sangre De Cristo mountains before reaching a mountain village Monday afternoon. His condition was not serious. Armistice day ceremonies and football games proceeded despite the chill.

Fire destroys Army equipment in Atlanta auditorium

In Atlanta on November 12 a fire gutted a four story section of City Auditorium used by the 179th Field Artillery. Army equipment valued at 150000 to 200000 was destroyed. Mayor Hartsfield estimated total damage around 350000 with partial insurance coverage. About 200 soldiers had just finished drilling. over 300 people were in the main hall for a Disabled American War Veterans dance when the fire broke out.

Gov Miles Attends Boulder Dam Meeting in Santa Fe

Will Lawrence urged Kiwanis support for Chaves County Red Cross Roll Call Thursday through Saturday. The club agreed to an inter-city meeting with Clovis Kiwanis in Clovis on November 20, pending noon or evening timing. A nominating committee for 1941 officers was formed.
