Two arrested in big marijuana haul and air drop

Police report a seizure of about 1 400 pounds of crude marijuana in 27 burlap sacks found in an U Haul trailer five miles south of Bagwell on U S 285. Arrested are Douglas Ray Burns Sr and Dan William Standlee both Alamogordo residents. Federal charges expected for smuggling or possession.

Largest crude marijuana seizure on U S 285 near Roswell

State police narcotics officers confiscated 27 burlap sacks on U S 285 south of Roswell containing about 1 400 pounds of crude marijuana. Each sack held 50 pounds or six to eight kilos with an estimated street value of 700 000 dollars. It was described as the largest such seizure in the area by local authorities.

Satellite education boon aids illiteracy fight

A 180 million ATS 6 satellite launched from Kennedy Space Center will beam televised educational and health programs to isolated regions. It will initially orbit 22 300 miles above the Galapagos, serving Appalachia, the Rockies, Alaska and New Mexico communities, then be loaned to India after a year.
