Poona Claims Victory In The Sea Fighting Before Australia

Japan's premier Gen Hideki Tojo warned Australia of an onslaught by Imperial Japan saying naval forces in defense of Australia had vanished. Italy Claims Two Torpedo Hits on U.S. Cruiser

Rome dispatch says Italian high command reports a submarine struck a United States Pensacola class cruiser with two torpedoes at dawn in the Atlantic while escorting a convoy. The claim follows other Italian assertions of hitting U S ships and a damaged Blakeley destroyer in the Caribbean.

Roswell Recruit James C. Goad Promoted to Sergeant

Roswell native James C. Goad has risen to sergeant in the air corps after enlisting six months ago. He received the promotion on April 1 while on a 15 day furlough from Moody Field Valdosta Ga where he serves as an engineering sergeant. In civilian life he was a carpenter and the army is utilizing his trade. He is home to announce an upcoming wedding on the society page. Goad praises army life and the officers and says待遇 is excellent.

More Troops Arrive at Roswell Air Base

Additional troops arrived by troop train and were assigned to quarters at the Roswell Army Flying School. A motor transport convoy also reached Roswell to augment existing facilities as vehicles traveled at a safe pace to conserve rubber and arrived without incident.

Mrs Cruce Dies At Ft Stanton In New Mexico

Emma Hardcastle Cruce, longtime Roswell resident, died at Fort Stanton Hospital after prolonged illness. Born 1874 in Texas, she leaves a daughter Mrs. A G Owen of Beaumont and five sons, along with many grandchildren. Funeral set for Thursday at 2 PM at Talmage Memorial Chapel with Allen Johnson officiating and interment at South Park.

Rent Control In Effect June 1 In 20 Communities

The Office of Price Administration announced federal rent controls will take effect June 1 in 20 war congested areas that failed to enact voluntary reductions. In 14 areas rents revert to April 1 1941 levels, including Detroit Bridgeport and Birmingham. four areas return to January 1 1941, and two to July 1 1941. Automatic reductions apply to all housing types without landlord approval.

Plan To Refinance State Highway Debts

Santa Fe May 27 The state finance board and highway commission will meet June 5 to draft a war time highway financial program within reduced revenues. Plan centers on refunding outstanding highway debentures, many held by the state treasurer, to free funds for a comprehensive maintenance program. The board postponed budgeting decisions until June 5.
