FBI School To Be Held Here In June Conference

D A Bryce FBI special agent in charge of El Paso will lead a police conference in Roswell on June 10 as part of eleven sessions across New Mexico and West Texas in June. The program follows Roosevelt's Sept 6 1939 proclamation naming the FBI as coordinating agency for national defense investigations. The conferences emphasize community benefit and national security through vigilant law enforcement and close department liaison during the national emergency.

Charlton To Hold Meeting Here June 2

Russell C. Charlton the adju tant general of New Mexico and state director of Selective Service will hold a meeting at the Roswell Junior High School auditorium next Tuesday night June 2 at 7 30 to explain Selective Service policy with reference to the occupational classification of registrants. Officers will be present to explain the deferment or non deferment of employees and an endeavor will be made to give all possible information concerning the administration of Selective Service in New Mexico. The meeting will be of vital importance to employers. Those invited to attend are employers actively engaged in war production program employers aged in business essential to war production federal state and local officials chambers of commerce other interested employers and individuals selective service officials.

Memorial Day Program at South Park Roswell

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held Saturday at 10 30 AM at South Park cemetery hosted by the Allied Veterans Organizations of Roswell. Rev Thomas W Brabham will give the address with various musical and ceremonial tributes including a salute by Company 21 NM State Guard and Taps by a bugler.

Roosevelt signs bill amending Titles 1 and 6 of the Federal Housing Act enabling additional insurance authorizations. The Roswell Chamber of Commerce received word from J Byron Barton that once instructions arrive, the FHA can commit to building a large number of houses for army personnel and defense workers in Roswell.

Flag Raising at Roswell City Hall Ceremony

The American Legion Auxiliary will present an American flag at Roswell City Hall Lawn at 9 30 Saturday morning. Mrs J D Atwood will make the presentation and City Attorney Ross L Malone Jr acting for Mayor Hall will receive the flag and speak at the Carlsbad Memorial Day program. The Roswell ceremony ends before the Memorial Day program at South Park begins at 10 30.

Jap Air Blow Seen Inevitable After Doolittle Raid

Secretary Stimson said the war department expects a Japanese air raid on the United States as a return blow for Brigadier General James H. Doolittle's Tokyo attack. He noted the west coast is the likely target and stressed preparations for a major offensive. He added an attack on Washington was not inconceivable and warned no defense is perfect along the long coast.

Armory Funded Air Conditioning for State Guard Dance

The armory on West Fifth Street is being air conditioned and the project will finish before the State Guard dance Saturday night. Funding comes from the armory fund and Company 21 State Guard fund, raised locally at State Guard dances. The dances are popular and help newcomers meet Roswell personnel. Everyone is invited to the dance and future State Guard events.

Job placements in New Mexico rise in April

The war manpower commission reported April job placements in New Mexico totalled 2,900, up four percent from March. Nationally, placements reached 605,200, rising 19 percent as the war effort expands.

Five Dollar Republic of Texas Bill Displayed

The Roswell Museum received a rare five dollar bill from the Republic of Texas as a gift from 1st Lt. Wilfred McCormick now serving at Fort Bliss. Issued in 1840 during the Texas republic era, the bill number 35 is among few surviving pieces with similar bills at the Alamo and in Washington. The artifact, more than a century old, is in fair condition and will be shown in a display case.

Roswell Man Promoted to Staff Sergeant at Randolph Field

Bernard C. McQuirk of Roswell New Mexico has been promoted to staff sergeant at Randolph Field known as the West Point of the Air. He is attached to the 14th Materiel Squadron and helps to Keep Em Flying.

MAJOR C M MARTIN now in San Antonio roams via Roswell to register for a few hours with his son Bill who will join the army if the war lasts longer. Martin served four years as superintendent of Schools in Chaves county and later taught at the Silver City Normal. He owns substantial Roswell property and may settle after military service. Howard Beacham, Alamogordo’s famed restaurateur for thirty years, sold his business to W L Harwell of El Paso. The Beachams’ note ends as the item continues on page two.

Annual Meeting of Chaves County Taxpayers Association

The Chaves County Taxpayers Association will hold its annual meeting on June 4 at 7:30 PM in the Chamber of Commerce air cooled rooms. C. N. Carlsbad Boy Crushed To Death By Truck Wheels

In Carlsbad New Mexico on May 28 a 11 year old boy named Jimmie Stepp was killed when he fell between the wheels of a large trailer truck after hopping a ride on its hauling frame. The truck dragged for nearly a block before witnesses stopped it. An inquest was set for today to determine the circumstances.

British Repulse Thrust At Flanks Of Libyan Defense

Cairo May 28 The Axis offensive in the Libyan desert pushed within 15 miles of Tobruk after being repulsed on both flanks. The advance reached about 30 miles beyond the British line between Bir Hacheim and Ain El Gazala as Rommel’s tanks pressed the attack. RAF bombers targeted armored units in El Adem and Bir Hacheim while the situation continued to develop.

State Employes To Aid In Farm Work

Boise Idaho May 28 Idaho state employes white collar workers highway maintenance crews and any others who will volunteer will work in the states 74000 acres of beet fields next week to avert a threatened sugar beet crop loss. Gov Clase A Clark has granted temporary vacations to all state employes who will volunteer for the work from Monday June 1 through Friday He even suggested he might take part in the work himself. Business men and others in one county already have taken to the fields. The governors action was taken after it was learned volunteer Japanese evacuee help upon which many farmers were counting was not developing to the extent expected.

Jowell Dies At Midland Texas Cattleman Built Rodeo Reach

Midland Texas May 28 Jowell a West Texas and New Mexico cattleman who helped make rodeo an international sport died yesterday at age 68. He introduced rodeo to South America in 1915 taking top western performers to Buenos Aires and Montevideo. British sportsmen backed the venture spreading the sport to the empire. Survivors include a son Myri Jowell of Tucumcari New Mexico. Services were announced for today with burial at Midland.
