John J. Dempsey announced as undersecretary of the interior he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor of New Mexico. Foster Sinks Deep Wells Near Lake Arthur Finally

C H Foster finally drilled near Lake Arthur and found a remarkable water well. The first well produced 1600 gallons per minute with only 26 inch drawdown, a 72 inch rise in a rubber tube test, and praised by well men as among the best in five years. A second well also delivered strong flow, though initially sand and gravel were present before clearing.

New Mexico Military Institute to Honor 50 Cadets

Commissions will be presented to about fifty New Mexico Military Institute First Classmen at the final ball next Monday night at Cahoon Armory. Major General Innis P Swift will present them at 12 01 a m on Tuesday June 2 1942. Cadets receive commissions dated June 2 1942 and report to active duty after graduation.

Chinese Suffer New Reverses On East Coast War

Chinese forces faced grave reverses as Japanese troops, about 100,600 strong, neared Kinhwa in Chekiang. Japanese air power disrupted Chiang Kai-shek's armies while Domei claimed breakthrough near the city and Chinese retreat routes were cut off. The situation remained grave with fierce battles expected next week.

The Senate defense investigating committee criticized the army and navy for not paring rubber needs to the bone and warned that without timely synthetic rubber the forces may lack rubber in the future. Roswell marks the closing of downtown funeral homes as Bert Ballard opens a modern plant at the old Nath an Jaffa mansion on South hill. The Ballard enterprise continues the Dilley Tilton Bynum lineage from the Hobson building. Other establishments included Talmage Mortuary near Pennsylvania Avenue, Schuler on West Eleventh Street, and Allery at a later site as the city relays its funeral services.

Pentecostal District Conference Planned Here

The Pentecostal Church will hold a district conference June 2 3 4 at the Senior high school auditorium. Howard A. Goss general superintendent will attend along with several returned missionaries from Africa. Daily sessions run 9 30 am to noon and 2 to 5 pm with a young peoples meeting 6 30 to 7 30 pm and evangelistic services 7 30 to 9 30 pm.

5-Year Artesia Child Suffocates

In Artesia New Mexico on May 26 a five year old boy, Paul Loucks, was found suffocated inside an old outdoor refrigerator after being missing for hours. Police and volunteers, including high school cadet corps, conducted a large search before the body was recovered. An inquest was scheduled for today.
