S M Taylor was digging postholes when a clanking metal object proved a hand grenade. A passerby stopped him and called police. Officers seized the grenade with its pin in place and dumped it into the Arkansas River.
Final unofficial tallies show 5719 votes cast in Chaves County across 39 precincts with six outlying precincts contributing 221 votes. The board will certify the results tomorrow as the official canvassing board reconvenes.
Audrey Joan Wideman of Roswell was killed when a 1948 Chrysler convertible failed to negotiate a curve on New Mexico Road 409 in Bottomless Lakes State Park. The 19-year-old driver James Quarles survived. Wideman was pronounced dead on arrival at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Funeral plans pending.
Texans and New Mexicans urged Congress to approve a $2,311,000 Pecos River reclamation project. Senate Democratic Leader Johnson led officials from both states in asking interior committees of the House and Senate to back the plan.
Slant Virginia resident John Salling, one of the South’s last Civil War veterans, requests Gov. Thomas B. Stanley to send him a Confederate shirt for his 110th birthday on Tuesday.
State Corporation Commissioner Ingram Pickett delays concession until the canvassing board meets on May 23 and declares a winner. Unofficial AP tallies give Gov. John Simms the lead over Pickett with Robert F. Stephens also in the race. Pickett planned court action to impound ballots but postponed after consulting attorneys and awaiting board review of alleged irregularities.
The First National Bank of Roswellton announces a new branch at 1100 S Main St on the southwest corner of Main and Reed Streets. The one story building will include drive in windows and walk up teller, with completion before July 1 and operation by Nov 1. J E Moore says OCC approval was secured and experienced staff will come from the main office.
The Beersheba to Tel Aviv railway was blown up three miles north of Beersheba amid limited details from an Israeli army spokesman. No casualties were reported. Additional minor incidents involved fire against a civilian truck near Kfar Saba and exchanges along the Jordanian border as U N mediators pursue the Middle East peace mission.
The Chaves County Historical Society hosts the New Mexico Folklore Society annual convention at Roswell Museum starting 9:30 AM with registration. Morning talks include The Indita and The Jones Family and the Apaches, with an afternoon program of talks and skits led by F. D. Jameson. A 4 PM tea closes the day with tours of Peter Hurd and other exhibits.
Allan D. Walker of Alamogordo won the Democratic nomination for the Third Judicial District in Tuesday's primary, defeating Lafel E. Oman of Las Cruces 4047 to 2300 as unofficial returns favored him. He will face Republican C. C. Chase Jr. of Las Cruces in November. C. C. McCulloh of Farmington is unopposed in District One, while District Two pits D. A. MacPherson Jr. of Albuquerque against Addison L. Strong of Albuquerque.
The jury in the O B Johnson trial deliberated after 9:52 a.m. with no verdict in sight. Prosecutors alleged two counts of embezzlement while the defense contended funds were patients gifts for an emergency fund.
In a high scoring affair, Chicago hits homers by Minoso and Kell while Keegan earns the win for the mound. New York answers with Mantle and Berra homers as Lemon Hegan and Mor contribute for the visitors. Berra scored late and kept the game close.
In Algeria heavy fighting between French troops and nationalist rebels continued as retaliatory strikes burned farms and attacked posts. Reports put rebel fatalities around 200 in western Algeria and at least 14 civilians killed in eastern towns, with 20 Europeans wounded. France called up 50 000 reservists and plans total 380 000 troops by June 1 to reach one soldier per three Europeans.
Firefighters enter the seventh day battling a stubborn forest fire near Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. A second blaze remains active near Latir Lakes by Costilla as winds 50 to 70 mph hinder control. About 150 firefighters work with reinforcements from Springer Industrial School plus Explorer Scouts from Albuquerque and Raton. The fires together exceed 5,000 acres.
An elderly Chinese man, Kom Sing, 74, is recovering from a snakebite after planning to create an arthritis remedy using seven rattlesnakes and gin. He intended to bottle the venomous snakes submerged in alcohol for a year and drink the liquid, but was bitten while handling a snake. Police and zoo workers found jars with rattlers, three dead and the rest unconscious, taken to the zoo.
