Reports say French forces killed at least 500 Algerians this week as the drive to suppress nationalist offensives intensified across western and eastern Algeria. Rebels reportedly suffered up to 1,000 deaths with Western and Kabylie clashes and attacks on farms and settlements near Algiers and Philippeville.
Sen. Chavez leads a Senate subcommittee review of a $33.6 billion defense bill while pressing for decisive tests to compare the Navy Talos guided missile with the Air Force Nike system. He seeks a closed hearing with Army and Air Force officials to judge range manpower and cost and push a competitive test within a reasonable time.
Michigan police Lt. Carl S. Pike toured the nation for highway safety and car protection. He followed a rule by parking his station wagon under a street light on a main street. Later thieves broke in and stole about $1,000 in valuables.
Former Pecos Valley Lodge head and ex NM Commission on Alcohol chair O B Johnson was found guilty on two counts of embezzlement after a 4 1/2 hour trial but received clemency. Judge George T Harris suspended both 1 to 15 year sentences, allowing Johnson to remain free indefinitely under future compliance.
The Senate approved a flood insurance bill by 61 to 7, sending it to the House. It would have the government sell insurance and pay 40 percent of costs, with states sharing subsidies after June 30, 1959. The bill authorizes direct federal insurance and reinsurance of risks undertaken by private firms.
Washington House Appropriations Committee recommends a boost of 1.983 billion dollars for the Agriculture Department. The increase funds farm programs and makes up losses on price support programs for the coming bookkeeping year starting July 1.
A 7 A poll of elderly residents in Long Beach shows they attend church less often because they cannot afford to contribute to the collection plate. The survey was conducted by the Community Welfare Council.
Deming reports C L Buskirk resigns as Republican nominee for Luna County sheriff citing health reasons. He had been a candidate in this week’s primary election.
Three witnesses testified at the inquest into Audrey Wiedman death, 15, in Roswell. Witnesses included driver James Quarles, ambulance driver Wilbur Fishtel, and NM Police officer R J McCool. The accident occurred on NM Road 409 in Bottomless Lakes State Park when Quarles’ 1948 Chrysler overturned pinning Wiedman. The jury ruled death from injuries in an automobile accident.
General Motors ordered a one day shutdown of automotive assembly operations. The impact on its 350,000 hourly workers was not determined immediately. Plants will close either today or Monday as managers decide, to balance production with current customer demand following Chrysler’s two day halt.
The Cherokee struck hazardous device test is planned for Sunday aboard the USS Mt. McKinley at Eniwetok, weather permitting. Observers include newsmen and civil defense leaders, with the original Monday date postponed.
William Wells, 72, of Dayton, Ky., was killed while gathering worms for a fishing trip. He tripped over a root while descending an embankment and his head struck a storm sewer.
New Mexico Military Institute the National Guard and Walker Air Force Base plan Armed Forces Day ceremonies in Roswell on May 20. Mayor E C Tucker proclaims the day to honor United States armed forces with a call for public participation in the events. The proclamation dated May 10 marks the 181st anniversary of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys capturing Fort Ticonderoga.
A Welsh letter writer appeals to Baltimore citizens to find a male Fergusson descendant to continue the Fergusson clan in the United States. He cites records of Fergusson and notes two brothers from Perthshire possibly naturalized in Baltimore. The letter recalls Fergus Mor MacEaren beginning his reign in 498 A.D.
Santa Fe Governor John F. Simms acknowledged that the closeness of his Democratic nomination race with Corporation Commissioner Ingram B. Pickett surprised him. He said he plans county by county analysis after returns are tabulated and noted no fraud charges.

U N Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold warned the Security Council against imposing a peace settlement on Israel and Arab neighbors. He said the cease-fire he negotiated could spark peace but a final settlement may be distant, and Middle East nations must lead the process. He urged limited UN and national roles to encourage Soviet and Western diplomacy and avoid outside imposition. See WARNS Page 9.
President Tito says Yugoslavia follows an independent course that links East and West. He spoke at a Foreign Ministry dinner during a six day visit to France and pledged constructional collaboration with all nations while remaining friends with both blocs.
Senators Young and Ellender express confidence a revised farm bill with a soil bank can pass into law even if President Eisenhower vetoes it. They expect Congress to override a veto, while Aiken warns the current measure is unacceptable and should be cleaned up or rejected.
In Cuba a school bus driven by Mrs. Steve Gurule rolled onto its top after brakes failed on a steep downgrade along State Road 126. Gurule deliberately wrecked the bus to avert a plunge into a mountain embankment. All 25 children suffered only minor injuries and are recovering.
New York reports the May 21 Stevenson and Sen. Estes Kefauver debate will be carried live on ABC radio and television from 10 to 11 p.m. EDT.
