Gov. John F. Simms led Ingram B. Pickett by about 2300 votes with 94 percent of New Mexico’s 930 divisions tallied. Pickett pursued a court challenge after yesterday’s Democratic primary, while Simms claimed victory pending final counts and possible recounts.
Early returns from 840 to 863 divisions show John J. Dempsey with 55 768 votes Antonio Fernandez 53 919 and Richard Robinson 33 296 in Congress. Joe Montoya carries Lt Governor race with 53 569 and Murray Morgan tops John Miles for land commissioner. Bear in mind Mechem gains renomination slate without opposition while Simms aides report a postponement of a Hawaii trip.
Roswell moves toward selling the West First fire station site and funding two new stations. Resolution 916 approves a June 5 bid opening for 290000 in general obligation bonds including 75000 for sewer extension and 125000 for land building and equipping two stations. Bonds dated July 1 1956 bear up to 6 percent interest.
Roswell Future Farmers of America Chapter took first place in soil judging in the western region of the national contest held in Oklahoma City May 4 and 5. Team members Jack Moritsky Charles Glover Tommy Turner and Carl Henderson plus sponsor Bradley Houston earned a trophy and a $25 prize.
CIMARRON Wind driven fires across 8500 acres in northern New Mexico retreat slightly as hundreds of firefighters and winds push to contain them. The Philmont Scout Ranch suffers 2000 acres burned with 3500 more burned near Latir Lakes on the Colorado border. Forest Service teams join efforts as inmates from the New Mexico Industrial School for Boys, explorers from multiple cities, and Guardsmen support the response. Authorities authorize the Forest Service to lead Latir Lakes firefighting operations amid rugged terrain and 60 mph gusts.

The Talent was slightly damaged after a collision with an unidentified tanker off the Isle of Wight. No injuries were reported among the crew aboard.
Henry Ford II resigns as board chairman of the Ford Foundation founded by his family. He will remain on the board and step aside in favor of Rowan Gaither as full time chairman, after submitting a letter dated April 18. He has held the post since 1943.
In a Cleveland New York game Rosen and Berra hit home runs as Score wins. Morgan suffers the loss while Larsen and Grim contribute for New York. Chicago defeats Boston 7 to 5 with Lollar homering and Hurd the winning pitcher.
Dr Edward C Holmblad of Chicago warned Oklahoma City delegates that the world now faces manpower failure rather than mechanical breakdown. He told the Oklahoma State Medical Association convention that physicians focus on preventive health and aim to reduce their own workload.
Tuesday general election results show veteran state Sen. Henry Eager losing renomination to I. L. McAlister in a tight contest. Calvin Horn trailed Irving E. Moore in Albuquerque for the Democratic nomination, while I. M. Smalley defeated Robert S. Palmer in Luna County. Others like M. P. Carr, Jack Danglade, and R. C. Morgan secured renomination and reelection due to no opposing candidates.
In a five race Democratic primary in Chaves county Cecil Johnson won the unopposed nomination for county commissioner from district 1 by deposits against incumbent A. D. Chatten. Results show light turnout with 5498 votes from 33 precincts out of 11 221 cast in the 1952 general election.
In Artesia yesterday Democrats nominated F. F. Elvin for justice of the peace Precinct Six over incumbent John Ellicott by an unofficial 48 to 570. Clarence Key won the county commissioner nomination from District Two with 1,986 votes countywide. Foster 2,067 and Haldeman 2,061. In Artesia Key had 734 votes. Foster 231. Haldeman 437.
John Simon a probate judge candidate in Carlsbad New Mexico died of a heart attack during the voting. He had 1313 votes when the election ended. Bert Rawlins won the Democratic nomination over incumbent Ed Gentry who also collapsed from a heart attack as the tally mounted. Gentry was treated in hospital and listed as fair.
