Southwest Roswell residents grilled City Manager C M Woodbury at a council meeting about flood prevention after a severe flood. They pressed on Union Street dike plans and how defenses would protect homes while debating dikes bridges and possible federal loans.
A city council meeting prompted S. Elmo Henslee to propose a protest meeting on a zoning issue. The suggestion sparked a lengthy discussion among a party involved in last night's session, ending with Henslee quipping that the protest meeting should not start immediately.
The Ruidoso Water Users Association and four water users obtained a $3500 award after Judge E T Hensley Jr enjoined the village of Ruidoso from taking more water from the Rio Ruidoso than allowed by its water right. They claimed municipal use in 1950 and 1951. the village acquired the right in 1953. Damages sought totaled $23149 including losses claimed by one user for cattle and pasture.
United States Weather Bureau reports temperatures at three hour intervals from 2 p m yesterday to 11 a m today for Cass and adjoining stations with readings from 63 to 73 degrees and a high of 73 and a low of 40. No precipitation in the last 24 hours, trace for month, 1.70 year to date, 2 40. Sunrise 5 05, sunset 6 44, day length 13 7 hours. Forecast for Wednesday and Thursday calls for clear to partly cloudy skies, warm afternoons, high near 80, and a low around 45 with less cool nights.

Two American ships rescued hundreds of passengers from a British steamer after a predawn crash with a transport in the North Sea. The Haiti Victory towed survivors to Harwich while the Duke of York suffered severe forward damage and possible injuries among its crew.
The Chaves County cotton crop suffers 15 to 20 percent loss from a 95 mile dust storm with alfalfa drought effects. Soil Conservation notes soil removals of one to two feet and fences buried up to three miles from Roswell. Officials say final damages and weights await later acreage reports while insured producers rise to 87 percent. The storm is described as the worst here in 19 years.

Mayer 56 of Santa Fe New Mexico faced a district court bond hearing in Bloomfield Iowa on a first degree murder charge for the slaying of John C Wisdom 51 of Des Moines on a farm near Bloomfield last Saturday Mayer surrendered to authorities in Kirksville Missouri and was returned with his wife Katharine 47 to Iowa as defense counsel seeks to reduce or block bail citing self defense and proper charging New Mexico friends Pat Hamilton and Larry Bynon planned to testify as character witnesses at the hearing.
The Roswell Lions Club plans its yearly Mother's Day dinner on Thursday May 7 at the Woman's Club starting 7 p.m. The event honors Lions families with guest speaker Rev. Mebane Ramsey of Hagerman and master of ceremonies Past president Don Roff. Prizes will go to oldest and youngest mother and the mother with the most children.
Acting Gov. Tibo Chavez proclaims the week of May 10 17 in Albuquerque as New Mexico Boys Ranch Week to honor work with youth and ranch communities.
A German police dog named Sabre alerted and helped save a mother and four children from a fire that destroyed two homes on the French Farms. Sabre pulled children from beds and drew Mrs. Green to awaken them as fire consumed the farm home in Roswell.

Scoutmasters and Cubmasters will be recognized for their work. retiring district chair man Charles Malone will pass leadership to W. A. Snipes. More than 85 accountants and businessmen are expected to attend a one day accounting conference Thursday at Eastern New Mexico University.
