Residents Question City Flood Plans At Roswell Council

Southwest Roswell residents grilled City Manager C M Woodbury at a council meeting about flood prevention after a severe flood. They pressed on Union Street dike plans and how defenses would protect homes while debating dikes bridges and possible federal loans.

Ruidoso Water Users Association Receives $3500 Award

The Ruidoso Water Users Association and four water users obtained a $3500 award after Judge E T Hensley Jr enjoined the village of Ruidoso from taking more water from the Rio Ruidoso than allowed by its water right. They claimed municipal use in 1950 and 1951. the village acquired the right in 1953. Damages sought totaled $23149 including losses claimed by one user for cattle and pasture.

City Council Advances Flood Control and Zoning Plans

In a 4.5 hour meeting the Roswell city council reviewed flood control steps, heard a protest on the uniform plumbing code, and approved an advisory planning and zoning board. They OK’d bids for police uniforms and motorcycles, shared crime and traffic statistics, and set bids for a new fire chief car. Fiesta homecoming for NM ex POW Pedro Herrera

Cpl. Pedro Herrera of Albuquerque and La Madera returned after two and a half years as a prisoner in Korea. A 1200 strong crowd welcomed him at Albuquerque Airport with a police escort, a Mexican band, and fiesta queens. He attended a church blessing with his parents and family, then shared a homecoming cake with relatives.

The Chaves County cotton crop suffers 15 to 20 percent loss from a 95 mile dust storm with alfalfa drought effects. Soil Conservation notes soil removals of one to two feet and fences buried up to three miles from Roswell.
