Armi Kuusela the Miss Universe 1952 from Finland married Virgilio Hilario a Filipino businessman in a small Tokyo church. The couple planned a whirlwind honeymoon and future travels before settling in the Philippines.

George Charles Cressman 17 a New Mexico Military Institute cadet private first class collapsed and died at the armory around 3 p m after class. He was carried to the hospital and an iron lung used. Death declared natural and instantaneous. Cressman a Newark New Jersey native and sixth classman was a rifle team member. Funeral held in Artesia with body sent to Newark. Father Dr Frederic E Cressman artesia eye ear nose throat specialist. Mother died January.
Farmington town board members reportedly turned down an application to open a house of prostitution. News reporters at the meeting did not publish details at the board’s request.
LeRoy Briscoe says he will appeal a Quay County decision denying a package liquor store license at Quay. A group of Quay property owners protested the license.
Three large military transport planes carried 149 liberated American POWs from Korea toward Hawaii and the mainland. All were in surprisingly good spirits with some wounded, including amputees, walking ashore as Red Cross nurses welcomed them.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration will merge its seven domestic regions into four. New Mexico will join Region 4, whose new administrator is Joseph Marriott.
Metropolitan Opera soprano Patrice Mun sel gave birth to a 7 pound 7 ounce daughter early today at Polyclinic Hospital. Both mother and child are reported doing fine.
Denver meteorologist Dr. Irving Krick forecasts 15 to 25 percent above normal rainfall for New Mexico in May. A high pressure system moving west from the Gulf of Mexico and cold Canadian air converging are expected to bring extra moisture to ranchers and farmers.
Three miles deep and still drilling the Richardson and Bass No. 1 Cobb well leads a wave of costly wildcat tests in Eddy County east of Carlsbad. Industry sources estimate each well may cost about a million dollars to drill as 175 wells were started or completed last week in Southeast New Mexico.

Cecil Johnson resigns from the board of county commissioners effective April 28. Gov. Edwin L. Mechem to appoint a successor to serve the unexpired term through December 1954. Johnson had served a second term and previously chaired the board as his colleagues urge prompt gubernatorial appointment.
Governors from 44 states and five territories met in Washington to hear the Eisenhower administration’s plan to cut spending and bolster civil defense against atomic attack. In Albuquerque a U S District Court trial over a 60 000 damage suit centers on the death of James J. Lavelle a Roswell soldier. His widow Anna S Lavelle claims carbon monoxide from negligent LP gas appliances at Orchard Tourist Court caused Lavelle and another soldier to die after spending a night in December 1951.
Red Cross spokesmen announced a bloodmobile unit arrived for a four day collection. It was at NMMI from 10 a m to 4 p m today and will be outside St Andrews Episcopal Church on Wednesday between 1 and 6. Thursday and Friday it will be at WAFB. The unit serves parts of Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
Washington Senate Judiciary Committee approved President Eisenhower’s nomination of George W. Beach for U S marshal of New Mexico. He would replace Martin Lopez of Albuquerque, marking a transition in the Albuquerque area federal enforcement office.
Sgt. Gerald Edward Neighbors 22 returns from Korea and prison camp to Roswell Texas where his wife Shirley and daughter Cynthia Kay 2 await. A family reunion in Hereford follows his Amarillo arrival after years of hardship and separation.
An early morning blast and fire in Texarkana leveled about half a city block of shops near a Negro residential area on the Arkansas side. One injury was reported from flying glass. authorities suspected a gas explosion. Several stores including Helms Men s Shop Crusnoe drug store Bell Radio Store and Martin radio shop were destroyed or damaged. Police noted some looting with hats seen on fleeing individuals.
Cheyenne Wyoming reports Sam B True of Twin Falls Idaho won the 11 state Future Farmers of America regional speech contest. Robert Martin of Anthony New Mexico placed eighth and True will travel to Kansas City for the national FFA contest on October 12.
