New Mexico Primary Election Votes Stir Contested Races

Voters head to polls Tuesday to nominate candidates in 10 contested races for national and state offices and legislative seats. Estimates place turnout between 55 000 and 100 000 with 83 000 votes cast in the 1958 Democratic presidential year. Top contests include governor contenders Holm Bursum and Alvin Stockton on the GOP ballot and a heated school superintendent race.

Walker Denies Auditor Attack as Irresponsible

Land Commissioner E S Walker called allegations by State Auditor Robert Castner against him irresponsible and untruthful. Castner said Walker ordered Land Office staff to back J D Hannah over Louis Lopez in the Democratic auditor race. Walker, away at the time, issued a statement saying he told employees not to actively campaign but to vote as they choose.

Judges to Judge Cotton Queen Contest May 11 in Roswell

Judges including Peter Hurd will rate Southeast New Mexico Cotton Queen contestants at Roswell Junior High School on Tuesday May 11 starting 7 30 p.m. Contestants will be judged in bathing suits and cotton outfits across two sessions with the winner to be announced after. A full week of entertainment accompanies the event including Carnation ceremonies at Fair Park stadium a baseball game May 12 and a downtown street dance with a fashion show.

Attorney's Heart Attack Delays Felty Murder Trial

The case State of New Mexico v Wilbur F Felty, set to begin tomorrow, is moved to June 14 after Felty's attorney Caswell Neal of Carlsbad suffered a heart attack. Felty faces murder charges for the Aug 24, 1952 shooting of 51 year old Robert Lee near Horne's South Main store after a chase. Lee had a carton of cigarettes and a magazine found on him. Yuma Ranch Couple Killed in California Plane Crash

A private plane carrying Harold Woodhouse 54 and his wife Ethel 53 from Yuma ranch along with his brother in law and sister Clarence and Mrs Curtis of Anaheim Calif crashed into a mountainside 38 miles northeast of Phoenix.
