RIAC buildings option outlined as city studies deal

Mayor Brainerd announced a 90 day exclusive option to seven RIAC buildings and ramps for LTV Electrosystems. The council approved sending a telegraph offer while directing bids for a new police cruiser. Brainerd said city activity should be coordinated by the city manager Hoyt McMinn.

Senate Adopts Textile Import Quota Proposal Amid Debate

The Senate approved Sen. Hollings textile import quota as an amendment to the House excise tax bill. Hart and Percy failed in a bid to table it 54 to 35, then the amendment passed 55 to 31 though not locked into the Senate bill yet. The plan targets woolens and man made fibers, allows six months for agreements, then quotas based on 1961-66 import levels, drawing White House opposition and concerns of retaliation.

Jail Order For Powell Not Made

A New York judge refused to jail ex congressman Adam Clayton Powell for contempt, keeping him on parole pending appeal. If his appeal fails and he dodges a 30 day jail term, his political career in New York could end. Powell, 59, was paroled after promising to begin appeal within two weeks.

Chamber stats show growth in stockholders in drive

The chamber reports more support as 25 new firms and individuals join the current membership drive. Man Dies In Blaze At Midway

Jack Miller age 65 dies in a four room frame at Midway nine miles south of Roswell after a fire gutted the house. Fire Chief George Daniels and Sheriff Tom Nord found the body in the debris as State police assisted. Cause listed as possibly smoking in bed with Miller found across the bed springs. Services pending at Ballard Funeral Home.
