Joseph W. Martin Jr. longtime congressman and former House speaker known as Mr. GOP died at 83 in Fort Lauderdale. Born in North Attleboro, he began in the Massachusetts House in 1912 and served 21 terms in Congress, leading the GOP in the House during the 80th and 83rd Congresses. His career ended after a 1959 defeat in the GOP primary.
