California style punch cards sent as bills may be outlawed under a Civil Service pay and postage bill set to take effect around April 1. U.S. Sen. Joe Montoya relayed to Bruce Poorbaugh that the measure requires clear marking to distinguish solicitations from bills.
A federal judge found draft director Hershey merely expressed his personal opinion in a letter to local boards suggesting possible reclassification for prompt induction of some antiwar demonstrators. The ruling addresses the legality of his guidance amid ongoing draft policy debates.
A car going the wrong way on the Los Angeles to Las Vegas route slammed into a Greyhound bus near Baker California killing many and injuring twelve. Authorities said 20 bodies were burned and mangled as crews searched for identification.
Eight trainees and one instructor attempted a 2.2 mile crossing of the Potomac River in a 25 foot canvas canoe from the Quantico Marine base. A body, Staff Sgt. Kenneth N. Andrews, was recovered eight miles downstream while seven Marines and one Navy man remain missing as search efforts continue.
Rescue crews found 16 bodies of the 21 salt miners trapped two days in a Cargill mine near Calumet Louisiana 1200 feet underground. Officials offered no word on the remaining five and crowds mourned as rescue efforts continued.

Hazel released workers from his supervision but will not return himself while the director remains.

President Johnson may push fresh pressure as unions press wage demands while four major firms Kennecott Anaconda Phelps Dodge and American Smelting and Refining resist. A White House blackout hides progress though officials warn the strike endangers foreign trade, domestic prosperity and Vietnam war supplies.
The Senate votes 67 to 18 against an Ervin amendment to make it a federal crime to interfere by force or threats with a person going to or from work. The proposal targeted picket line violence in labor disputes and faced opposition over expanding FBI jurisdiction.
