SANTA FE The New Mexico Highway Commission reversed its limited access standards for new interstate super highways amid federal-standards debate. The move, driven by rural fears of lost through traffic, allows accessways where feasible, prompting engineers to question alignment with federal law. Federal officials say access must be controlled, and some engineers fear federal override or required rule clarifications.

Clovis AFB Pilot Dies in Jet Crash After Collision

Major Manuel A. Pidcock commander of the 429th Fighter-Bomber Squadron at Clovis AFB New Mexico was killed when his Saber Jet crashed 40 miles west of Milford Utah after a collision during a three plane flight. Brig. Gen. William Momyer landed safely at Wendover AFB. Col. Franklin S. Scott also flew the third aircraft.

Civil War's Last Union Survivor Lays in Coma

Albert Woolson the last Union Civil War veteran lay in a coma at St Luke's Hospital Duluth Minnesota with lung congestion. He is 109 years old and in critical condition as hospital staff report no change since he became unconscious yesterday. Three of his six daughters are at his bedside.

Cornerstone Ceremony Planned at New First Christian Church

Dr C M Eiffert will speak at the First Christian Church cornerstone ceremony in the new Chisum and South Main building after the 10 30 a m worship. The $400000 one story structure is under construction with Vorhees Standhardt as architects and Valley Building Co as contractors. The ceremony includes a Bible inscription a church history talk and presentations by Steve Crosby and Charlie Johnson with various church officers named. The original 1895 cornerstone from 400 N Richardson Ave is moved to the new site with the date 1956. The new church won t be ready for occupancy for months. State Traffic Toll Climbs Upward to 211

A Friday night crash killed 42 year old Agnes May Seckler of Mexico Missouri and injured others. The death toll for the year rose to 211, compared with 173 by late July last year. A separate wreck near Pecos killed 14 year old Anthony Montoya, and another crash near Budville claimed 27 year old Mike Reed.
