New York portrait of Admiral Charles Dwight Sigsbee who commanded the battleship Maine when it sank in Havana harbor and precipitated the Spanish American war. He died of heart disease at home today. He had been in declining health for a year, aged 78, and retired in 1907 after 48 years in the navy.
One of the valley's largest Masonic gatherings occurred at the Masonic temple last night as the visiting Masonic Service party addressed members after local lodge leaders opened the event. John Terril of Dallas spoke on the work with three reels of film, joined by Andrew L. Randell of Washington DC who described the service, scope and ideals of the association. Other speakers included Grand Master Joseph Gil, Judge Lively, Richard Thorne, Victor Minton, and Wilbur Keith who presided. Frances E. Lester from Mesilla Park attended as past grand master. The party departed this morning for Alamogordo and El Paso for further meetings.

Funeral services for Captain Jac. W. Poe, who died in Battle Creek Michigan Tuesday night, will be held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. from the family home at Seventh and Kentucky. Dr. Austin D. Crife will conduct the service and burial will be in South Park. Masonic services will be by Grand Lodge EK with A Cahoon in charge. Mrs. Poe will accompany the body arriving Saturday afternoon.

In Beaumont Texas a local bootlegger used a turnip patch to conceal a cellar door over a booze operation. Authorities uncovered about 100 gallons of mash and several bottles of finished product when the patch and door were removed. The owner was arrested.
Plans for a concrete spillway to replace the current dirt and rock dam at Lake Terrell municipal reservoir were approved after a city commissioners meeting in Texas. The spillway, estimated at 10 000 dollars, will be 70 feet wide, 500 feet long and 15 feet high. The decision follows a near flood disaster when seven and a half inches of rain in 48 hours washed away dam and spillway portions.
