In Austin on July 20 the state automatic tax board comprising the governor treasurer and comptroller met to reassess the maximum ad valorem tax rate. The rate remains thirty five cents per hundred dollars valuation. Present assessments show a reduction of 12 million dollars from last year’s total.
Ed Leader arrived at Yale from Washington as a total stranger and introduced a new stroke called the Leader system. It replaced the English method, emphasizes upright torso, strong leg drive, and powerful arm pull. Yale defeated Penn, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton, and Harvard, with some sailors failing to adapt returning to the second crew.
Unsettled weather is expected tonight and Saturday across New Mexico with likely local thunderstorms and little temperature change. A low pressure pattern persists over the Southwest with high humidity. rain chances are about 20 percent as temperatures range from the mid 60s to the mid 90s, highest yesterday 94 and lowest last night 69.
Robert M Byers died last night at his home after a long illness. Born January 26 1896 in Delaware Ohio he served with Co K 47th Infantry at Meuse Argonne. He spent 17 months in hospitals including Limoges base hospital 13 in France before returning home to Ohio for burial.
Up From Hagerman: Mr. and Mrs SV A Losey came up from their home at Hagerman this morning and spent the day here tending to business matters. Leave For Pine Lodge: Mr. and Mrs Claude Simpson and baby will leave in the morning for Pine Lodge to spend the remainder of the week.

Houston police seek a youth named Jack connected to the finding of sixteen year old Geanette Bowers unconscious on a city sidewalk. The girl says Jack gave her liquor before she lost consciousness while he was taking her to a dance.
In Dallas on July 20 several independent companies announced gasoline would sell for eleven cents a gallon, the lowest price in years, following Magnatia Petroleum’s thirteen cent cut last Thursday.
In Forney Texas on July 20 Mayor C L Duke notes cotton tops state output while hay remains premier horse feed with 500 acre meadow worked by a crew. Forney once had vast hay lands but rising cotton prices edged hay from prominence. hay quality still acclaimed statewide.
The Beeville Independent School District board schedules an August 11 election to approve a $15,000 bond to repair district school buildings.

Lieut. Russell Maughan, forced to land at Rock Springs Wyoming due to a fuel tank leak on a dawn to dusk cross continental flight, will not resume until next summer. Major Frank said daylight length and engine work will delay the attempt, with three quarters of an hour already lost and a new engine to be installed.
William H. Anderson, superintendent of the Anti Saloon League, pleaded not guilty to three indictments here. He faces two counts of grand larceny and one of forgery and is held on a $5,000 bond for allegedly misappropriating funds.

Berlin reports Germany’s July Fourth holiday will be August 11, chosen by the Reichstag juristic committee to mark the Weimar republic’s birth. Last year a quiet observance occurred while right party members opposed the change. An additional national memorial day for World War I soldiers will be set on the sixth Sunday before Easter.

The proof is to be before the Register or Receiver at Roswell on July 27 1928 with witnesses William R McKnight Frank M Remmele Earl McDowell and Lotts McKnight all of Roswell New Mexico. G W Shrader sixty six died at home on South Main Street after prolonged illness. Born March 24 1857 in Manchester Tennessee he lived in Arkansas and Texas before moving to New Mexico in 1909. Survived by wife one son five daughters and one grandchild. Funeral plans pending with Roswell Undertaking Company.
Taxpayers Association of New Mexico compiles county figures for the year ending Nov 30 1922. Total receipts 12 075 695 39 dollars. Disbursements 11 754 015 94 dollars. State payments 2 666 893 49 dollars and city payments 707 735 50 dollars. County government cost 8 211 516 61 dollars. Major items include schools 5 684 435 04 dollars roads and bridges 652 378 06 dollars and salaries 643 449 64 dollars. General expenses 437 948 81 dollars. interest 325 349 68 dollars. Other costs cover court house jail repairs and county services. Revenue mainly from general property taxes 83 percent. state school fund about 1 000 000 and bond sales about 500 000. Expenditures by cities and state departments projected to push total New Mexico government cost for 1922 to about 16 000 000 dollars, up seven percent from 1921.

Chelsea Mass July 20 a 13 year old Elizabeth McDonald is being held for questioning after telling police she pushed Jimmie McDonald a four year old boy through a hole in a wharf where he died. neighbors say the child was not right mentally and the mother claimed she did not know what she was doing. An accidental death verdict was initially returned but rumors in the neighborhood led to detention.
The Dallas park board unanimously voted to rename Fair Park Gaston Park in honor of Captain W. H. Gaston. The change awaits approval from the Texas State Farmers Association while a courthouse area around the race track is planned. City specifications for the project, drafted by Electrician E. H. Prattley, estimate costs at about $16,000.

Kansas City report states seventy five percent of mid-continent oil producers have shut their refineries to ease a surplus of crude oil. Officials of the Western Petroleum company announced the operation suspensions while surplus gas is removed. Producers earn little profit under current conditions.

Mexico City dispatch reports Pancho Villa slain by his own men at his ranch after a row last night. Telegraph clerk at Parral sent the notification to government offices. Villa was said to have been shot to death during the dispute.
