Heat And High Winds Continue Take Toll From New Mexico

New Mexico drought deepens as heat peaks and winds dry soil and irrigation water. Federal meteorologist E L Hardy reports scant rains, severe stock losses, and poor range conditions across counties including Bernalillo, Eddy, Lea, Mora, Quay, and Roswell area. Some southern crops and artesian irrigation hold up. other regions burn under drought.

Beauty Queen Victim in Death Mystery at Oklahoma

Norman Oklahoma July 11 AP Belief that Marian Mills a 20 year old University of Oklahoma campus beauty queen died in an apparent attempt to prevent motherhood was voiced by County Attorney Paul Updegraff pending a post mortem report. He based his theory on the story of Hazel Brown cook for the Delta Upsilon Fraternity whose apartment housed Mills body after Neal Myers a pharmacy student summoned a physician and then disappeared. Myers had come to the fraternity duplex with Mills Monday and remained until yesterday afternoon as the search continued.

Jinn Given 3 Days Tell of Trust Fund

Justice A L Zinn may answer within five days about the Williams remittances as E R Wright seeks a more specific denial of misconduct charges involving $1,000. The court rules the motion may be overruled unless Zinn wishes to answer, keeping the money intact as a trust fund. Painter Carl Church, alias King, gets life for murder

Carl Church, an itinerant painter also known as George Slim King, pleaded guilty in Jefferson Wisconsin to the murder of Earl Gentry, former bodyguard of D. C. Stephenson. He received a life sentence. Mrs. Carrie Gill, 58, widow, allegedly the mastermind, pleaded not guilty.

Albuquerque payroll fraud case ties CWA funds to theft

Epifanio Mares was arrested in Albuquerque by a federal agent on charges of manipulating CWA project payrolls. Investigators found checks endorsed and cashed while workers were paid in cash, with payrolls certified for full weeks though many workers recorded only two days. The probe began after complaints from W. E. Rutherford, Sandoval County manager, and followed a New Mexico department inquiry.

First Shipment Of Drought Cattle Here

The first shipment of edible cattle bought by the federal drought relief program in Chaves county will depart this afternoon. Two car loads totaling 92 head leave Elkins and one car load about 40 head leaves Roswell. Shipments are expected to continue daily, with about 250 cattle shipped per day, as slaughtering of condemned cattle under the program proceeds.

Farley Travels West to Aid Senator Cutting and Others

Postmaster General Farley tours the Rocky Mountain West in July planning stops in Albuquerque Helena and Butte to back Senator Cutting and gauge administration support. Plan to ship high grade cattle to feed lots in drought areas

Dr. F L Schneider of the U S Pau teau of Animal Industry outlined a plan for New Mexico drought zones to select high grade range and dairy cattle for shipment to feed lots. Cattle would be bought for slaughtering purposes and later used as breeding stock or for milk for families on federal subsistence homesteads. Buying and shipping under the plan to begin in a few days.

State to consolidate game and bird units into new division

Crop acreages next year to stay unchanged

Washington July 1 The AAA likely will keep acreage production unchanged for next year due to weather averages and a large carryover from the nation’s granary Officials note crop reporting board figures show 1934 output at 483 662 000 bushels for all wheat a June decline of 18 000 000 and about half the normal 886 359 000 bushels Secretary Wallace says the 15 percent reduction under 1928 32 average will continue unless other nations fail to meet the international wheat agreement and may expand production if needed.

Tornado strikes Jacksonville injuring seven in Illinois

A July tornado in Jacksonville Illinois injured at least seven people including Edward Perry of Imlay City Michigan with possible skull fracture and broken limbs. The storm caused about 500000 dollars in property damage destroying 12 buildings and toppling two homes as a circus tent collapsed.

Mississippi votes dry as anticipated in referendum

Mississippi voters upheld prohibition by about two to one. Unofficial returns show 47 275 to 25 246 against the hard liquor bill in 658 of 2 596 precincts, prompting Senator Roberts to call on law officers to enforce the current laws. The result is a rebuke to the legislature which had authorized beer.

Austrian drive against Nazis tightens control in Austria

Vienna July 11 AP Engelbert Dollfuss the fighting chancellor announced a sweeping crackdown on the Nazi movement. He now holds all military and police power and ordered death for possession of explosives. A grace period will allow surrender of explosives before the death penalty. The new cabinet includes Dollfuss as chancellor foreign affairs and defense with Count Reudinger von Starhemberg and Emil Fey as ministers.

D N Jones dies in Roswell after long illness

Daniel Norman Jones died at six last night at his daughter’s home on North Richardson Avenue in Roswell aged 80. He had lived here since 1909 and leaves two sons and two daughters in Roswell plus another son in Colorado. Funeral at Ballard Chapel Friday morning with arrangements pending arrival of his daughter from California.
