Crop Acreage Declines In State By Sixteen Percent

Cattle Bought Under Drought Relief in Chaves County

A total of 2,097 head were purchased in Chaves county under the drought relief program. Of these, 1,965 were condemned for shipping meat, 132 were edible and shipped. Purchases came from 124 owners as two more Bureau of Animal Industries retrainers arrived to assist.

Neblett to Name Farm Committees Amid New Relief Law

Santa Fe July 12 AP US District Judge Colin Neblett will appoint conciliations commissioners in bankruptcy for each New Mexico county with over 500 farmers under a relief measure. The new law eliminates the petition of 15 farmers. commissioners handle farm mortgage bankruptcy cases. Kalembach of Las Cruces remains serving from Dona Ana county, the only petition under the old rule.

Predatory Animals Killed in New Mexico

Albuquerque July 12 AP A total of 2871 animals including 17 mountain lions and one bear were killed in New Mexico by the U S Biological Survey during the fiscal year ending June 20 The tally shows 308 bobcats 1983 coyotes 28 coyote pups 17 lions 2 wolves 8 stock killing dogs 1 bear and 531 miscellaneous predators June added 184 predators 15 bobcats 88 coyotes 3 lions and 78 miscellaneous Two lions were killed in Hidalgo county and one in Catron county.

Santa Fe Council Reverses Liquor License Policy

Santa Fe city council changed its stance at a July meeting by voting four to two to allow bottle liquor licenses for restaurants, reversing a prior ruling that restaurants were not mercantile establishments and thus not entitled. Girl Killer Is Slain By Prison Guard

Jackson ville Arkansas July 12 AP Helen Spence Eaton 21 once called a bad girl who vowed never to be captured alive is dead shot by a guard less than a day after fleeing a women’s prison farm. Frank Martin fellow inmate guard fired when she reached for a pistol and died at the scene. Coroner L C Aday reported the guard and two youths aided efforts to stop her nine miles from the farm.
