Washington reports estimate that no more than one or two civilians were killed in Wednesday’s bombing of oil targets near Hanoi and Haiphong. Officials say the strikes were highly accurate, aimed at military targets, with food and irrigation dikes not targeted.
Paris reports France exploded an atomic bomb from a tower above a lagoon in the South Pacific. Defense Minister Pierre Messmer predicts first missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead will be operational in 1969. Britain and the United States regret the test while the Soviet Union remained silent after President de Gaulle’s visit. The Maruboas test site is in French Polynesia.
Alonzo D. Chatten 80 of Roswell died Saturday after 36 years in the area. A former Chaves County commissioner chair and Soil Conservation District chair, he held the office in 1945 1947 and 1955. He supported Eastern New Mexico Medical Center and served 59 years as election judge. He was active in Masonic groups and Baptist churches. Survivors include Lena Frances Randell Chatten and relatives in Texas and New Mexico. Funeral Monday at the First Baptist Church with Masonic rites at South Park Cemetery.
