NM Senators scrutinize antipoverty programs in New Mexico

Sen. Clinton Anderson and Sen. Joseph Montoya arrived in Albuquerque to vet antipoverty efforts amid reports of inflated salaries and delays. Anderson called for identifying beneficiaries and backgrounds while Montoya pressed for more action over planning. Montoya also alleged nepotism in Head Start and cited regional administration issues.

Westinghouse Named To Take Over Roswell Water Plant

The saline water conversion plant at Roswell New Mexico will be operated by Westinghouse Electric Corp Lester Pennsylvania starting today. American Hydrotherm Corp Long Island City New York has maintained it since 1963. The 1 798 000 dollar facility will join expanded water treatment research this fiscal year with about 700 000 dollars approved by Congress. The plant currently undergoes modification and is not in production. When active it produces one million gallons of fresh water daily for Roswell and has supported flash distillation process research in recent years.

Buckles Named Administrative Assistant at New Mexico Development Department

Fred Buckles of Santa Fe, former Albuquerque Journal newsperson, was appointed administrative assistant to the director of the Department of Development. The choice comes from new director B. Duke Mayshark who began his duties today.

More than 6 400 hospitals opened medicare funded beds for Americans 65 and older with a Civil Rights Act compliance pledge. HEW reports 92 percent of eligible hospitals certified, mainly in the South nonparticipating hospitals limited to emergencies only.

Mother to Face Charges In New Triple Drowning

In Fairfield Maine three children ages 6 4 and 9 months were found drowned in a rural home. Police will seek a murder warrant against Constance Fisher 37. The mother previously attempted suicide and was committed in 1954 after similar drownings.

June Marks Ninth Wettest Rain Month in 73 Years

The month ending Thursday was the ninth wettest in 73 years of weather bureau records with 2.35 inches of rain. Temperatures averaged 91.4 maximum and 61.7 minimum. highest 101 on June 7 and lowest 51 on June 11. One sunny day, five thunderstorm days, and one fog day were recorded. Historical wetter Junes listed from 1898 to 1949 show higher rainfall amounts.

Lunar Explorer Rocket Launch Aims Moon Orbit

NASA launches Lunar Explorer on a 246000 mile 74 hour flight toward the moon from Cape Kennedy seeking data on the lunar environment and radiation shielding. If successful it would mark an American first lunar orbiting payload and test solar wind effects and magnetic tail shielding.

Medicare Draws One New Patient

Medicare in the area shows a slow start with only one patient admitted by midmorning while 21 long-stay patients are slated for today. Social Security officials offer a weekend toll free tracing service and 9 pm hours, as enrollment nears 2,700 in Chaves County with about 2,945 eligible.
