At Monday's Roswell Infrastructure Committee meeting officials discussed the possibility of eliminating bus fares. Becky Hicks, Roswell Transit director, presented the concept earlier in January, and members supported reexamining it as a potential action item with a list of saving measures.
A Texan T-6 training plane from a Navy group out of Corpus Christi landed on its landing gear at Roswell Air Center at about 12:50 p.m. after a gear issue. No injuries. Fire department and law enforcement secured the area as crews inspected the damaged gear.
Paul Monis, 41, pleaded not guilty in Roswell NM to seven counts of criminal sexual penetration in the first degree of a child under 13, two more counts, great bodily harm, and mental anguish. He also faced charges of criminal sexual contact with a minor, abandonment resulting in death or great bodily harm, and witness bribery. Jury trial set for Sept. 16.
Senate approves SB 48 creating the Community Benefit Fund to back climate projects and renewable energy infrastructure. The plan, backed by Mimi Stewart, aims to reduce fossil fuel use and modernize grids, with an initial $340 million cited but later removed in committee. The bill heads to the House Energy committee for consideration.
The New Mexico Forestry Division and NMFD contractors start restoring Rubidoso area forests and watersheds damaged by last summer's South Fork and Salt fires. Work includes removing hazardous trees and setting erosion barriers to reduce flood risk and protect homes and lives. The fires damaged or destroyed over 1,100 homes, with about 230 lost to post-fire flooding. State Rep. Harlan Vincent calls the funding vital for safety and protection of property.
