Senators C B Trujillo and Alex Martinez push Senate Bill 91 to spend 20000 from the general fund to hire the legislative finance committee for a 16mm color motion picture showing the legislature in action. Critics say no film is necessary and the state could save the money.
The House considers a joint resolution for a constitutional amendment to bar union membership as a job prerequisite. Sponsor Rep. J. Gregory Merrion, R San Juan, leads the push amid New Mexico political divisions.
An explosion damaged the British consulate in East Jerusalem while another blast hit Lydda City market, injuring a man and damaging a motorcycle. Miss Joan Bennett, 28, an Ipswich secretary, escaped injury in the consulate blast. The market, near Lod International Airport, was closed after the detonation, which also toppled electricity lines and killed chickens.
Minority leader Rep. Steve Helbing warns tax levels may exceed voters’ tolerance as a proposed compromise would allocate about 13 million for public schools within an estimated total tax take of 30 to 40 million. He notes most tax is paid by earners under 12 thousand dollars annually, urging scrutiny of sales and income tax sources. Senate figures from Sen. Harold Runnels suggest a compromise school program to be finalized within ten days.
In Santa Fe, Dean Robert S. Stone of the University of New Mexico Medical School denies calling a proposed rural health care program a scientific disaster. He disputes a Legislative Finance Committee report quoting him and says he does not know what a scientific disaster is. A university official did not confirm the quote.
Lincoln County notes excellent skiing at Sierra Blanca with a base depth of 42 inches and nine inches of new snow over the weekend.
The storm drenched California with record rainfall driving evacuations across six counties. About 6,000 people fled floods and earthslides as highways washed out and Santa Paula Creek flooded the town. Mudslides endangered homes near Lake Hughes while Riverside Orange and San Luis Obispo counties opened Red Cross relief centers and Marine helicopters airlifted food to about 3,500 stranded in canyons.
President Nixon pledged U S support for an enlarged Common Market including Britain during a crowded eight hour London visit. He met Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, spoke with Prime Minister Wilson, and attended an impromptu Commons session while security operations highlighted his public outreach.
Santa Fe AP The New Mexico House Ways and Means Committee delayed Senate approved Sunday liquor sales legislation. A voice vote moved to group all Sunday liquor measures for House consideration. Rep. Ernest Miera said consolidating bills saves time. the measure still must pass Appropriations and Privileges and Elections panels. Sen. C B Trujillo criticized triple referral as unfair and warned it could set a dangerous precedent.
New Mexico State Aggies and Colorado State Rams earned at large bids to the NCAA University Division tournament. NMSU, 21-3, and Colorado State, 15-4, will open March 8 at five sites including Las Cruces Pan American Center. Lou Henson praised the invite but noted Charlie Criss is ineligible. Criss’s absence may affect the Aggies.
