W C Laser Bill Montoya and Delbert Boggs from Roswell joined three other hunters at the Artesia Sportsman's Club state championship event over the weekend. Foxes coyotes ringtail cats and bobcats were harvested. A banquet at Jackson Restaurant capped the event.
Three Puerto Ricans jailed for shooting at the U S House of Representatives fail to obtain freedom from the Supreme Court. The ruling follows years of appeals over legislative culpability and sentencing.
Army pathologist Col. Pierre Finck testified at Clay Shaw's trial that Kennedy was hit by only two bullets, both fired from behind. He said no evidence supported a shot from the front, while Zapruder film helped establish shot sequence. Shaw, 55, faces conspiracy charges in Kennedy's 1963 Dallas murder.
Two 14 year old cousins Barnard Lee Cheremiah and Thomas LeRoy Cheremiah died in a one car crash near Laguna when the vehicle plunged from a 90 foot cliff on NM 279 after returning from a basketball game. Natalia Herrera 59 of Tularosa died in a separate crash near Snyder. Her daughter and grandchildren were treated and released.
The New Mexico Senate tentatively approves a substitute to bar wrongful entry of public facilities. The Finance Committee drafted the measure to counter incidents on college campuses in other states. The Senate voice vote sent the bill to further consideration after the House passed it 62-0. The Senate also killed a flood control borrowing bill for county boards.
President Nixon arrives in London on a working visit after addressing NATO in Belgium. He meets Prime Minister Harold Wilson, vows to seek negotiations with the Soviet Union within NATO, and shows optimism about Western alliance unity amid Berlin and East‑West tensions.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower rests comfortably after a 2 hour 20 minute operation at Walter Reed Army Hospital to remove an intestinal blockage. Surgeons found two large adhesive bands from prior surgery. His vital signs are satisfactory and his cardiac status remains stable as aides monitor developments. President Nixon, abroad in Brussels, is kept informed of the situation.
The New Mexico House in the 1969 session's eve of general legislation deadline received 52 bills plus memorials and resolutions. A package would keep the elected state auditor but shift duties, raise the auditor’s salary to 12 500 and governor’s to 25 000, and create a five member legislative accounting review committee. A gasoline tax rise to eight cents was sponsored by John Mershon. A proposal for tourist facility liquor licenses was killed.
