Roswell First Baptist Church plans an all day event to mark its 75th anniversary on May 18 a Sunday. Former members are expected to attend and services are scheduled for that day. The church newsletter features a 1930s deacons board photo with names to be dated.
John H. Shaffer, 49, aerospace and auto parts executive, was named federal aviation administrator by Secretary Volpe for President Nixon. He headed TAM Inc. of Cleveland before taking the post. The AP brief also covers Sirhan Sirhan’s courtroom remarks and other regional items.
President Nixon addressed the Bundestag in Bonn urging that success in negotiations with the Soviet Union depends on the strength of the Western alliance. He praised twenty years of peace among allied nations and stressed Germany and the United States share economic bonds vital to a strong free world economy. Kiesinger framed unity as Bonn’s aim, acknowledging differences in form but stressing cooperation with the United States as essential.
Thiokol vice president Dr. Robert L. Marquardt says the governor’s comments show a lack of information about Thiokol's Roswell operation. He cites Thiokol training center, a two year state contract plan, and Roswell community support as key factors in attracting industry and jobs.
Two representatives of the Justice Department’s Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs led an all day drug seminar for Roswell area law enforcement at ENMUR Adult Education Center. Keith Shostron and Bill Fuller covered investigative techniques pharmacology and drug identification to about 50 officers from 15 agencies sponsored by the Roswell Police Department. Shostron noted the high potency of drugs and said 2.2 pounds of LSD could turn on New York City.
Gov. David F Cargo appoints Jimmy J. Hooper of Roswell to the Old Lincoln County Memorial Commission to fill the expired term of Col. E. L. Lusk. Hooper, a Hobbs native long based in Roswell, will serve until Aug. 17, 1973, and has background in business, military, and education at Eastern New Mexico University. The eight county panel includes Lincoln, Chaves, Otero, Lea, Eddy, Roosevelt, Curry and DeBaca with one at large member.
Governor David Cargo says Thiokol has not created a single job in Roswell and should move a plant there to invest in New Mexico. He notes state funding for Roswell ENMU Roswell, Ortiz and DOD backed programs totaling about 600000, and questions potential separation of development from magazine and tourism divisions. Friday finance committee hearings likely to shape industrial relations and Thiokol involvement.

Essa 9, the final weather satellite of its generation, blasted into orbit from Cape Kennedy aboard a delta rocket. The hatbox shaped craft carries two cloud seeking cameras for daily global weather views. NASA officials hailed the successful, precise launch as the craft reached a near circular 900 mile high orbit.
Cape Kennedy reports all three Apollo 9 crewmembers James A. McDivitt David R. Scott and Russell L. Schweickart developed mild sore throats and nasal congestion possibly delaying the Friday 11 a.m. EST liftoff by one to two days. Medical officials will reassess Thursday with a recommendation from Dr. Charles A. Berry after morning exams.
